Software-defined vehicles for the commercial vehicle market

A new point of view report from our automotive and intelligent industry teams.

The software-defined vehicle (SDV) concept is critical for commercial vehicles (CVs). It addresses the increasing complexity faced by manufacturers, and helps the transportation business manage today’s mounting cost pressures. The concept also opens up a wide range of opportunities, including various new business models.

However, the transition to SDVs is challenging, as evidenced by the passenger car sector. Overall , the passenger car industry has yet to realise the expected financial and technical returns on its SDV investments.
The major obstacle to SDV success is the sheer complexity of the transformation, which involves integrating strategic, cultural, organisational, and technological changes. High development costs are another obstacle, along with the difficulty of creating bug-free, safe, and compliant software solutions.
By leveraging SDV experience from passenger cars, and utilising accelerators such as software-driven transformation frameworks, CV companies can overcome these obstacles. They can confidently tackle technical challenges like enabling over-the-air updates and harnessing AI. Equally important, they can address management challenges such as transforming a prescriptive organisation into an adaptive one, equipped to succeed in a volatile and highly competitive world.
In this way, CV companies can excel in delivering SDVs and associated services at scale, while continuing to support existing products and meet their growth targets.
