World Quality Report 2022/23

Welcome to the 14th edition of our World Quality Report (WQR).

This is the industry’s largest research study providing a comprehensive assessment of the current state of quality engineering practices from around the world, and across different industries. Over the last 14 years, it has tracked and examined the most important trends and developments in quality assurance and testing, by surveying more than 1,750 senior executives globally across multiple sectors and 32 countries.

Overview

Capgemini and Sogeti are publishing this report with our strategic technology partner Micro Focus. The topics covered are as far-reaching as possible to capture the nuances and trends in the industry, with key findings and recommendations across several key focus areas: agile quality orchestration, value stream management, intelligent automation, test environment provisioning, data quality, sustainable IT, and quality engineering for emerging technologies.

Expert findings are accompanied by commentary, examples, and best practices from more than 15 senior executives from various Fortune 500 organisations, who participated in deep-dive interviews around these topics.

The closer you look the more you see

The image of the drop of water to illustrate this edition conveys the key messages of this year’s report, ‘The closer you look the more you see’. The water-drop represents the agility and adaptability of the quality function. The pureness of water reflects the growing importance of sustainability and sustainable IT. Water is an essential building block of life, just as quality and test is an essential building block of IT. Also, the water-drop can act as a magnifying glass, revealing the tiniest details, but can also become as broad and wide as the ocean. In the same way, quality and test engineers can validate and reveal minute technical details at component or API level, but can also reveal and ensure quality at a macro business process level, ensuring customer experience, and acting as brand ambassadors.

Changing times again

Over the last two editions, we discussed the impact of the COVID-19 crisis – which prompted faster and more impactful IT developments and digital transformation – and how everyone, including the quality engineering and testing functions in organisations, adapted to the new normal.

This year’s edition looks at how we are witnessing an even greater acceleration of that agenda on a global scale across all industries. To cope with this, the development of unified digital platforms, agile solution delivery, hyper-automation, advanced analytics and AI, and business and IT fusion will all be required to push organisations forward. But without the right level of focus on quality, we are putting brand reputations and business outcomes at stake.

If anything is clear from this year’s survey, it is that quality operations and quality engineers play a more pivotal role than ever in enabling organisations to achieve higher levels of flexibility and agility, while assuring positive business outcomes and greater customer satisfaction.

Key highlights/recommendations

Some of the key highlights from this year’s report that impact your journey to quality engineering are as follows:

  • Ensure adequate orchestration of quality activities in and across agile development teams
  • Fully integrate end-to-end quality and test automation in the IT development process
  • Equip quality experts with the latest and smartest quality technology
  • Give more attention to test infrastructure and test data provisioning
  • Define, track, and monitor the right set of quality indicators
  • Increase the technological and domain skill levels of the quality teams.

New to this year’s report

New are the topics of sustainable IT (what role has quality to play here?), and value stream management (will this help us in achieving better control of quality?). We have also introduced a chapter on the impact on quality of emerging IT technologies such as the metaverse, blockchain, and virtual reality.
