Like many young people, I was unsure of where I wanted to take my career

Unsure of her direction at first, Sareena explored various paths during her time at university, ultimately finding a love for data analysis and constantly pursuing growth in both personal and professional aspects. Now as part of the women’s network, read why Capgemini has been a perfect match for Sareena.

In sixth form, I studied Biology, Economics, and Geography. Although I didn’t do a GCSE in Geography, I quickly realized that I enjoyed the subject. This led me to study Geography at the University of Nottingham.

During the first semester of my degree, I was offered an opportunity to undertake a quantitative pathway to graduate in Geography with Quantitative Methods into Social Sciences (BA Hons). Since I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I decided that undertaking this pathway and learning a different skill set could only be a positive thing.

In the second year of this quantitative methods module (Q-Step), I was offered the opportunity to apply for placements to put into practice the skills I was learning. I was fortunate enough to secure a placement with Nottinghamshire Police as a Data Analyst. During this placement, I realized that I really enjoyed data analysis. Although I had gained competencies in programming languages such as RStudio and SPSS, I saw that expanding my programming knowledge and strengthening my technological base could aid me in pursuing a career in data. My university offered a one-year master’s in Computer Science, and I decided to enrol. Although I struggled through much of that year trying to get to grips with such a vastly different subject from Geography, I managed to graduate with a Distinction and a published article.

During this year, I applied to Capgemini and joined the Graduate scheme in September 2022. Shortly after, I started my first project as a Data Engineer.

Outside of my project, I have been involved in the Women’s Network 121 Mentoring Scheme, volunteered to interview placement students, and undertaken my level 0 Architecture Certification, to name a few things. I actively seek new learning opportunities to grow both personally and professionally, and Capgemini has been a great place to do this so far. I look forward to seeing what opportunities Capgemini offers in the future!
