The UK government plays a leading role in the creation of a more responsible and sustainable business landscape, by deploying its substantial procurement buying power to achieve wide ranging social value goals.

As a strategic partner to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), Capgemini has developed a framework of programmes and initiatives that are closely aligned with the UK government’s priorities and Social Value Model. Together they are delivering significant and measurable impacts, locally and nationally.

Capgemini’s social value approach has been developed to enable a broad spectrum of social issues to be addressed, improving the life prospects for thousands of people in the local communities in which they operate in. It strongly supports the UK government in its bid to tackle economic inequality, fight climate change, promote equal opportunities, and seeks to improve the health and wellbeing of the nation, through shared ambitions.

The dedicated Social Value team at Capgemini has forged strong relationships with councils, schools, businesses, community organisations, and charities, to build an understanding of the unique local requirements, and to pinpoint where support is most needed in the areas surrounding its regional delivery centres.

Bespoke, sustainable, long-term programmes and initiatives have been designed by the team, to equip local individuals with the skills, access, and confidence they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world by providing advice, work experience, internships, skills, equipment, and volunteering opportunities.

Impactful Community Programmes

Locally, Capgemini’s approach has offered a variety of programmes and initiatives, including an Entrepreneurship Week for students; an employability program with Telford College; a mentorship program for people over 65; and the introduction of LEGO League in primary schools – all designed to improve skills, confidence, and social mobility.

Delivering positive outcomes for Telford communities

  • Entrepreneurship Week allowed 16 and 17-year-olds to tackle real business problems, enhancing their research, analysis, idea generation, and presentation skills. The experience boosted the students’ confidence, sharpened their analytical abilities, fostered teamwork, and provided valuable insights into employability skills.
  • Capgemini partnered with Telford College to create an employability programme to help unemployed individuals gain certified skills in employability, customer services, and basic coding. Participants also gained real-life corporate experience through a one-week work placement. This boosted their skills, provided industry-recognised certifications for their CVs, and increased their confidence and chances of securing permanent employment.
  • A team of volunteers collaborated with the local council to develop a mentorship programme aimed at increasing digital skills and online confidence for people over 65. They provided one-on-one support in local libraries, delivering an 8-hour course to help participants use digital technology in their everyday lives. This helped the participants to connect with friends, family and wider society, enhance independent living, and improve overall wellbeing.
  • Capgemini teamed up with the local council and the Institute of Engineering to introduce LEGO League to 10 local primary schools, inspiring children aged six to nine to engage in STEM learning through hands-on activities. Over 10 weeks, a team of mentors helped students research, design, and build prototypes using renewable energy sources for their superpowered models. A LEGO League festival was held where students could showcase their creations, collaborate in teams, explore engineering, and express their creativity and imagination.

These examples illustrate just some of the ways Capgemini drives meaningful and impactful collaborations through its long-standing partnerships in the local areas surrounding its regional centres, in alignment with the UK government’s own social value objectives.

Easily adapted for use across the UK, digital skills programmes are also provided nationally, targeting individuals of all ages and backgrounds who may be facing challenges, young and older people alike, including refugees and veterans, all designed to improve access, bridge the digital divide, and unlock potential.

Capgemini believes that the acquisition of digital skills can help to create opportunities and choices to help individuals achieve their employment goals, from finding a job to staying connected – and that business can be a powerful force for good. It is committed to making a positive impact in all aspects of its work, from supporting local communities to safeguarding the environment. This translates into developing sustainable solutions, empowering individuals, and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority, collecting the money that pays for public services and helping families and individuals with targeted financial support.
