Capgemini UK increases ranking to 25th position in the overall index

The Social Mobility Foundation has announced the Social Mobility Employer Index 2021, recognising the top 75 UK employers who have taken the most action to improve social mobility in the workplace. The Social Mobility Employer Index was launched in 2017 and has grown to become the leading authority on employer-led social mobility: assessing UK employers on the actions they take to ensure they are open to talent from all social backgrounds.

This year, Capgemini UK ranks in 25th position, in the overall index for the work we undertake to enable those from lower socio-economic backgrounds to succeed. We are proud that our ranking has increased this year, reflecting our continued commitment and actions on social mobility throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Measures taken by us to improve social mobility include:

  • Targeting our schools outreach work on social mobility “cold spots,” and running our digital “Learnathon” series
  • Virtual work experience programmes, including one dedicated for young people in foster care
  • Working closely with organisations including The Prince’s Trust, Young Professionals and the Careers & Enterprise Company to support young people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Our volunteer-led Coding Academy with Code Your Future, trains and supports refugees and people from disadvantaged backgrounds, with several of the course participants now working at Capgemini
  • Our market-leading apprenticeship programmes, which create opportunities for those who are looking for an alternative to university
  • Our strengths-based recruitment process also looks for potential rather than past experience, which supports recruiting apprentices and graduates who may have not had the opportunity to take up work experience
  • Internal advocacy in highlighting different backgrounds and routes into our industry from team members at all levels

The Social Mobility Employer Index evaluates organisations across seven areas: their work with young people, routes into the employer, the attraction of staff, recruitment and selection, data collection, progression of staff and experienced hires and advocacy. In this fifth annual index, submissions reached a record high with 203 participating employers (up from 119 in 2020), employing 1.35 million people collectively.
