Enabling track asset decision support at Network Rail providing an improved and even safer rail service

Information Age October 2014Network Rail is embracing new, digital technologies to improve how they run the UK Rail Infrastructure. An industry that was born out of the industrial revolution is now deploying these digital technologies to generate innovative insight to improve service delivery. In doing so, the industry is leading the way in complex engineering projects.

The October edition of Information Age (pages 18-19) features a detailed case study of our work with Bentley Systems to deliver a Linear Asset Decision Support solution to track assets as part of Network Rail’s Offering Rail Better Information Services (ORBIS) programme –  an eight-year, £330 million enhancement plan.

Bentley Systems logoThe LADS solution uses industry leading capabilities to consolidate Network Rail’s complex engineering data and provide insight from that data to the engineer, enabling them to make better decisions on managing the track. Importantly, LADS ensures this information is available when and where Network Rail’s 800 UK-wide engineers need it and in a visual format that is easy to interpret and act upon. The solution combines data from 14 asset information systems into a single digital solution, providing a consolidated and aligned view of all rail asset data. Engineers can view, manipulate, and analyse this data via mobile devices at any time.

As a result, the organisation expects to save around £500 million every five-year control period, with £112 million capex and £13 million opex saved during the last period.

In this video (5m15s) Patrick Bossert, Director, Asset Information, Network Rail, and Russell Hodge, Capgemini engagement lead, tell the story.

You can also view Network Rail’s own video on the solution here: LADS – turning data into intelligence (3m42s). It includes insights from Network Rail’s engineers themselves on how they’re using LADS and how it is helping them in their day-to-day work.

As Jenna Davies, one of Network Rail’s track maintenance engineers, told Information Age:
Information Age logo“[LADS] is a huge step forward and a real success story for the UK. No other railway in the world has an engineering decision support capability as advanced as this. The more we can build on this, the more reliable a railway we will have in the UK.
