I was thrilled to have the opportunity to intern for two weeks at CCUK this summer and was excited to gain an insight into the secretive world of management consultancy.

By the end of my first day, I had already realised three things about Capgemini consultants:

  • Everyone uses acronyms for everything
  • Everyone is very friendly and always willing to help
  • Everyone eats a lot of Pret

Having gained a lot of experience working in creative marketing and advertising environments over the last few years, I expected consultancy to be a more corporate environment and less vibrant but what I realised over the two weeks is that the people make the place. CCUK truly has a wonderful community feel regardless of seniority within the company – everyone was so welcoming, friendly and always up for a laugh. It is also a pleasure to work with such intelligent, fun and hardworking people – being able to converse and learn from them has been an added bonus.

During my two weeks here, I’ve been well looked after by the Consultant Development Community (CDC) grads and manager which has allowed me to work on a range of projects to assist the company. I have worked with graduates on a charity challenge, created an info-graphic for project managers, written a research paper about social recruitment and produced videos about useful web tools which were shared on the company social network. Through these, I have strengthened my presentation skills in a professional environment from presenting my findings to a variety of graduates to speaking to consultants about their roles and industry insights. Absorbing all this knowledge has definitely prepared me well to embark on a journey of discovery, whether it’s in consultancy or not, and I look forward to improving these skills further as I start my career.

So what would I advise to those who want to find or make the most of work experience?

  • Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions – it’s the best way to learn and make the most of all the opportunities you receive.
  • Use your initiative – if there is something you want to find out more about, approach people and ask
    – not asking = not getting.
  • Chat to people – in consultancy, people are their assets so learn from them and don’t be afraid to connect with those you worked with on LinkedIn.

I have found by taking a positive attitude to work with these thoughts in mind, I have been able to make the most out of my experiences and expanded my professional network.

The most frequent advice I have been given this week is that using your initiative if the most important thing. Many people here have said that a fearlessness to develop your ideas and pursue opportunities is essential for success – not everyone will help you advance in your career so you must make things happen for yourself!
