Talking sustainability with Capgemini experts

The drive for automotive sustainability brings major disruption – but also massive opportunities

The move to electric vehicles is, on its own, an unprecedented transformation, and one that has to take place in parallel with other challenging transformations such as the move to customer-centricity, softwarization, and ADAS/AD. As if that picture isn’t complex enough, it’s now clear that there is much more to sustainable mobility than electrification.

Automakers know they must address the wider environmental impact of vehicle use, and not just the emissions from the tailpipe. And they increasingly realize that they need a holistic and systematic sustainability approach: one that addresses the entire automotive product lifecycle, as well as the business as a whole (including its processes and people) and all of its value chain. The circular economy needs to be a pervasive theme.

Although there is so much work to do, there’s also good news: Sustainability provides valuable opportunities, starting with the redefinition of the enterprise’s whole value proposition.

Don’t miss our new publications on automotive sustainability – or the videos

In our new CRI report:  Sustainability in automotive: From ambition to action, we reveal recent research findings about the automotive industry’s sustainability progress to date, and outline how the outstanding issues can best be tackled. This report was released October 17th at the Paris Motor Show, where we made a big splash with our presentations and demos around the topic of sustainable mobility.

To flesh out the picture of what should happen next, we’ve interviewed 10 automotive sustainability experts from across Capgemini Group. These interviews offer automotive clients practical insights into what they can do to overcome the complexities of the sustainability journey. They also illustrate Capgemini’s comprehensive capabilities across the whole field of automotive sustainability.

To find out more, please read our research report and the watch 10 interviews summarizing the expert point of view. Each brings its own thought-provoking perspective on how the automotive industry can achieve true sustainability, so that we all get the future we want. Stay tuned over the next few weeks as they are published.

Sustainability in automotive: From ambition to action

In our newest Capgemini Research Institute report, we examine the various aspects of sustainability in automotive in depth.

      Talking sustainability with:

The sustainability paradigm shift in automotive

Markus Winkler, Executive Vice President, Global Automotive Sector, shares his insights on how OEMs need to recognize that a paradigm shift in sustainability is underway. The key to achieving sustainability is switching from being reactive to proactive in the way automotive businesses are run, he says.

Can circularity bring OEMs closer to customers?

Clément Chenut, Circular Economy Expert, Group Sustainability Accelerator, Capgemini Invent, highlights an ocean of opportunities for OEMs in the circular economy. So far, most sustainability efforts have focused on the upstream end of the value chain: the provisioning of raw materials and battery production. But Clément is excited about untapped potential between end of use and recycling for vehicles.

      How can OEMs embrace circularity?

Is your automotive business investing in the right skills for a sustainable future?

What is the top lesson OEMs have learned about e-mobility?

Klaus Feldmann, CTIO for Automotive Sustainability and e-Mobility, Capgemini Engineering, shares insights into an important fact about e-mobility that has emerged clearly over the past 12 months: OEMs can’t do it alone, and must partner with others in the automotive sector and beyond.

Are consortiums enabling circularity in automotive?

Vera Schneemann, Global Lead, Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain, Capgemini Invent, shares insights into how the automotive sector can increase transparency around materials along the whole value chain. Progress on this front is already being made, particularly in refurbishment and reuse of materials for non-safety components. And the Catena-X open data ecosystem will have a big part to play improving traceability and circularity up- and downstream.

Automotive must look outside the industry for reuse ideas

How can data drive sustainability in the automotive sector?

Benjamin Fritz, Global Head of Automotive for Insights & Data at Capgemini, discusses why the answer to sustainability challenges lies partly in a data mesh. Data from development, production, supply chain, and logistics must be combined with data from vehicles and customers, providing a view across the entire value chain.

What are the foundations for sustainable transformation?

How does the smart factory support auto sustainability?

Smart factories support automotive sector sustainability in several ways, says Maryem Sahnoun, Sustainability Senior Specialist, Capgemini Engineering. For example, they maximize plant efficiency, allow for faster problem-solving, and capture data to inform sustainability initiatives.

Sustainably maximize auto assets with digital transformation

Connectivity creates entire new use cases for EVs

Connectivity unlocks a world of new uses for electric vehicles. Daniel Davenport, client partner, Capgemini North America Automotive, explains why this is an exciting time for connectivity – and for sustainability – in the mobility space: new capabilities, partnerships, and business opportunities are at hand.

EV performance and sustainability is driven by the ecosystem

Automotive sustainability transformation is a team sport

Achieving sustainability in the automotive sector will take a joint effort, says Daniel Garschagen, Lead, Sustainability in Automotive Business Unit, Capgemini Germany. For example, some OEMs are partnering with chipmakers to develop solutions in sustainability-related areas such as autonomous driving. Forming this type of partnership can be far more effective than developing offerings in isolation.

True benefits come from a holistic mobility ecosystem

How can OEMs achieve visibility of CO2 through the supply chain?

As an OEM, you have three main ways to gain visibility of CO2 in the supply chain, says Henrik Norrman, Senior Director, Sustainability and Innovation, Insights and Data, Capgemini Sweden. First, make sure you can access transparent data about every transport event. Second, build a good relationship with tier 1 suppliers, carriers, and the broader network. And third, educate decision-makers to act on sustainability data when designing processes.

The role of dashboards in automotive sustainability

What is the role of product development in circularity?

Designing and developing products with circularity in mind is the key to making it happen, argues Siegfried Adam, Director, Global Lead Sustainable Mobility, Capgemini Invent. Unless you design an automotive product in such a way that it can be remanufactured, reused, or recycled, these options will be difficult or impossible later.
