Capgemini joins Health Innovation Consortium’s EPR Network: Utilising technology and cross-sector expertise to drive change

Improving Electronic Patient Records (EPRs) across the NHS requires more than technology: it demands collaboration, insight, and a willingness to challenge. Drawing on Capgemini’s global health expertise and deep understanding of the UK public sector, together with Health Innovation Consortium (HIC) — an independent digital health consultancy specialising in the full EPR journey and founder of the UK’s first EPR Network — this collaboration combines complementary expertise to reimagine how EPRs can deliver real value for clinicians and patients. Rather than simply implementing new systems, the focus is on fostering shared learning, championing interoperability, and supporting the NHS and private providers to unlock the full potential of their digital investments.

Why now?

EPRs, while essential, often fall short of delivering their promised benefits. 56% of studies in a recent literature review indicated a positive impact on staff time, while 44% reported no or negative impact from EPR implementation. Constraints included fragmented systems, siloed innovation, regional variances, and a lack of standardisation. Combined with the pressures on staff to continue to deliver quality care while implementing new systems this creates a complex set of interdependent challenges.

The first year of the NHS England Digital Maturity Assessment (DMA)( 2023) revealed that although 90% of Trusts have an EPR in place, less than 30% of these are using advanced functions, such as record sharing with citizens or other hospitals.

However significant, these challenges also demonstrate a clear potential to unlock value.

What to expect

HIC’s EPR Network creates a collaborative space where clinical and non-clinical staff, providers, suppliers, and policymakers can share learnings and reimagine how EPRs are designed, implemented, and optimised. The network supports sharing resources, collaborative thinking and accelerated progress, regardless of region or funding.

With the support of Network members, HIC continues the conversation in dedicated spaces — bringing together a diverse group of expertise and experience to influence national digital and interoperability strategy and ensure lessons from across the system inform future improvement. Upcoming events include the EPR Summit 2026 and EHR Wales 2025, with further regional activities planned across Scotland, Ireland, and other parts of the UK. All those with an interest in building on EPR successes to date are welcome to register.

Capgemini’s Contribution to EPR Acceleration

As a strategic partner of the network, Capgemini will support:

  • Development of the network and the community around EPR collaboration
  • Co-development of guidelines, proof-of-concepts, and workflows reflecting real health and care needs
  • Interoperability and intelligent automation developing a network of champions across providers
  • Benefits realisation, ensuring digital investments deliver measurable improvements in care and efficiency
  • Curation of Specialist Interest Groups on key topics, starting with Maternity, to bring together experts and share best practice

By joining the network, Capgemini brings global health expertise and deep public sector digital transformation experience to advise on strategy and technology:

  • Global health insights: Led transformative projects with university hospitals in the United States, designing intelligent hospitals using digital twins, augmented reality for surgical planning, and AI-driven patient flow optimisation – improving colleague experience and patient outcomes
  • UK health knowledge: Longstanding NHS England relationships and experience across UK health systems ensure local context, challenges, and opportunities are understood
  • Public sector excellence: A trusted partner to government, with proven capabilities in end-to-end technology delivery, intelligent automation, benefits realisation, and strategic transformation – helping deliver relevant, accessible and impactful public services for less
  • Cross-sector insights: Experience across healthcare, life sciences, and the private sector, sharing learnings to drive demonstratable improvement to user experience and operational efficiency

Capgemini believes health innovation cannot happen in silos. By combining expertise through HIC’s EPR Network, this collaboration offers a fresh approach to driving the real change that the NHS deserves.
