Mike Dwyer and Rob Pears tell us all about Capgemini’s ‘Achieving Customer Value – powered by Intelligent Industry’ award and provide some insight on what the judges will be looking for

At Capgemini, we believe that UK manufacturers at all scales, in all industrial sectors, have great stories to tell around achieving customer success with the power of Intelligent Industry. We’re proud to be associated again with The Manufacturer MX Awards programme in partnership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), this year sponsoring the ‘Achieving Customer Value  – powered by Intelligent Industry’ award.

The Manufacturer MX Awards (TMMX) have a combined heritage of over 50 years and are widely regarded as the gold standard in industry awards. TMMX Awards exist to encourage, benchmark, and celebrate manufacturing excellence, with every stage of the programme providing value for participants, whatever their excellence maturity. TMMX Awards are the biggest annual celebration in the manufacturing industry’s calendar, attracting more than 1,000 attendees each year. The awards aren’t just about the ceremony itself; they are the culmination of a rigorous programme designed to provide valuable business improvement advice and feedback from an expert panel of judges.

The Achieving Customer Value award recognises the importance of connecting the customer, workforce, supply chain, communities, and stakeholders together to power innovation in products, services and the value released that is enabled by insightful data and personal empowerment. We believe that the judging criteria reflect the need for macro-level thinking delivered through both incremental and step-change improvements to drive customer and stakeholder value. How the value is expressed is in the “eye of the beholder” whether that be to the customer, leadership, or wider stakeholders.  That for us is where Intelligent Industry becomes a powerful way to understand, visualise and communicate what value can be and what is being realised.

What is Intelligent Industry?

Intelligent Industry is the evolution of Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution. The rapid development of technologies like cloud, 5G, Edge computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and the Internet of Things (IoT) means that the world has been unlocked.

Companies have previously focused internally on digitising headquarters and corporate functions, building monolithic management platforms and latterly by transforming their end-user and customer experiences.

But now data is everywhere!

As manufacturers, we live in an ocean of fast-moving time critical data from social media sentiment, to customer feedback, sales figures, demand forecasts, supplier requirements, regulatory and compliance changes, environmental, community and stakeholder needs. Making sense of this data at the right time and in the right context creates powerful decisioning insight that can improve performance and increase revenue to support entry into new markets or sectors.  Real-time insight allows us to adapt to changes in the market, environmental, and social conditions that were previously unthought of or unplanned for.

This new paradigm of data rewrites all the rules and can enable a new vision of the future to emerge.

Through data, an object – physical or digital – now becomes an object that learns; that can read, interact, sense, communicate and collaborate.  This provides new possibilities for us as innovators, manufacturers, and end users, to think and work differently.  We can create new possibilities and solutions especially when transitioning from traditional product centric, to connected product, to intelligent platform, service, and fleet-operation centric business models.

We see the rise of the new intelligent value chain based on: physical-digital mobility, energy & emissions optimisation, connected products & assets, precision self-automated manufacturing, a highly connected and secure supply chain and services – these are new areas where we can see big spaces for our clients, for UK manufacturing and for Capgemini.
