Airbus Unveils Innovative Wind-Assisted Technology for Maritime Transport to Tackle Growing CO2 Emissions

We often hear about the carbon footprint of air transportation, but did you know that the maritime transport industry is creating an even greater volume of CO2 emissions?

The OECD reported that in 2022, the global shipping industry produced 858 million tons of CO2, compared to 739 million tons produced by air transport.
 
Since 80% of the world merchandise trade by volume is currently being transported by sea and this volume keeps on increasing, the situation can only get worse if we don’t thoroughly decarbonise our maritime transport … 
 
Container ships, bulk carriers, oil tankers, all of these behemoths of the sea still overwhelmingly rely on fossil fuels to power our global economy. We need innovative solutions to power our maritime trade in order to reach our goals of net neutrality. 
 
The shipping industry has launched some initiatives already but some solutions may come from unexpected sources.
 
I was very interested to learn more about the vision that Airbus just unveiled to power its own transatlantic transport fleet using wind-assisted technology, which certainly makes for striking looking vessels.
 
Besides the pursuit of #sustainable #innovation via hydrogen-powered planes, it is very interesting to see Airbus also propose innovative and sustainable designs for maritime transport.
