Rail control command and signalling systems

Delivering safe and efficient Digital Signalling systems is a multi-faceted challenge. Capgemini engineering partners with leading railway innovators to win the race for next-gen railway networks.

The railway industry is under enormous transformational pressures growing passenger numbers, rising expectations of both comfort & safety, and increasing competition. Railway operators are responding to these pressures by modernizing their rolling stock, and making their signaling systems more efficient and ready for future mobility challenges through digitalization.

Our services range from strategic consultancy and engineering talent ramp-up to fixed-price delivery of large complex projects. We provide our clients a one-stop shop to drive the efficient development and integration of critical, autonomous signaling systems.

What we do

Capgemini provides end-to-end Critical Software Engineering expertise, including MBSE, High Integrity Agile software development, and automated test development and execution.

We design, develop, test, and maintain rolling stock systems, control-command automation systems, traffic management systems, and trackside protection systems.

Featured case studies

Degraded mode working solution for a Rail Operator

The challenge: Minimize disruption caused by signaling system failure by improving decision-making. The system was developed to monitor trains' position trackside infrastructure and allow controllers to issue movement authority to train drivers. A prototype was demonstrated on a test train.

Automatic train protection from system to software for a rail client

We delivered the SIL4 Software Development and System Test, took responsibility for system safety cases and system V&V, and completed independent safety audits. The system is now operational.

      Virtual train for Alstom

We built an award-winning solution that leverages AR, VR, and mixed reality to validate train systems. The digitization of testing uses 3D and synthetic visualization, existing technical frameworks, and team experience.

Infrastructure model and simulator for a Rail major player

Capgemini developed and operated a simulator (BITS) to reduce the integration risks and costs of signaling systems testing. BITS simulates safety-critical systems, including interlockings, infrastructure (e.g., track layout), and train movement.

          Infrastructure digitization for SNCF

ERTMS requires detailed digital descriptions of track geometry. Generating this data manually is difficult. Our innovative solution combines LIDAR, aerial photographs, secure methods, and other technologies to ensure data integrity. We successfully applied this to an ETCS branch.

Trackside systems application data validation for Spanish railway client

Railway configuration is complex, particularly for high-speed lines running under ERTMS. We carried out systematic tests to ensure specific interlockings validation of automatic train protection systems (ERTMS) and subsystems integration with control centers.
