AWS re/Start Launch: An initiative to bridge the digital divide

Swati Sonawane, a software developer in Capgemini, is a beneficiary of the Digital Academy programme.

The eldest of two siblings, Swati lives in Pune, Maharashtra. Her mother is a homemaker while her father is a healthcare worker who was the sole breadwinner of the family before Swati began working. After she finished her four-year engineering degree, Swati decided to look for a job to support her family.

Around the same time, Swati was introduced to the Java Developer course, which is a part of Capgemini’s Digital Academy initiative.

“The cost wasn’t much, and I really wanted to learn, so I decided to go for it,” says Swati. The course trained her in technical skills and also helped her sharpen her interpersonal and communication skills. “I made sure I participated in each and every activity,” she recalls.

Swati realised that she was interested in software engineering and decided to pursue it further. She had the full support of her trainer. The soft skills training helped her perform well in the interview and Swati secured a job as a software developer with Capgemini. She is proud that she has a well-paying job and she can contribute to the family. “Today, my younger siblings consider me as their role model and want to follow my footsteps when they grow up. That makes me so happy!” says Swati.

She hopes to continue her path of exploration in the field of technology. “The best part about my job is that I learn something new every day,” she says.
