Capgemini & IIT-ISM Dhanbad: Fostering Industry-Academia Relationship for a Sustainable Future

20 Sep 2022

At Capgemini, we are continuously striving to create a gateway to a global ecosystem.

Towards this effort, we are advancing our diverse, global ecosystem in order to expose companies to the latest thinking, technologies, and experiences from a range of ecosystem partners – Academia being one of them.

Capgemini and the Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad (IIT-ISM, Dhanbad) have announced a collaboration to develop new solutions across a range of industries. The alliance aims to foster industry-academia collaboration, particularly in the context of Capgemini Engineering’s efforts in the application of low-carbon technologies for the promotion of sustainability and a positive planet.

Since April 2021, Capgemini’s Automotive India Industry Platform (Auto IIP) has collaborated with IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. As part of this project, subject matter experts from Auto IIP and the bright minds from IIT ISM work together to develop PoCs based on the growth trends of the automotive industry.

Capgemini has selected interns from different streams of academics: Engineering: Electrical Engineering; Computer Science (AI, ML); MBA – Business Analytics; M. Tech – Maintenance Engineering and Tribology, etc. This was followed by an interview round with faculty and mentors. After the HR round, the selected students were then onboarded as Interns by Capgemini.

The project kickoff was facilitated by SMEs from Auto IIP, and the project milestones were identified as Scope Finalisation, PoV and PoC Documentation, Solution Development, and Demonstration. In the same vein, the faculty from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad approved the Statement of Work (SoW) for three Proofs of Concept (PoCs). Mentors walked interns and faculty members through the scope of work. Capgemini experts provided guidance on business scenarios and technical solutions. IIT-Dhanbad faculty assisted with prerequisites such as software, infrastructure, and technical assistance.

Here is a quick glimpse of the PoCs developed:

On January 31, 2022, the success of Industry-Academia collaboration with Capgemini Automotive IIP and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was commemorated in a virtual event. Capgemini’s efforts to bring the world of practise on to campus by fostering industry readiness and collaboration will continue to grow over time.

The industry frequently focuses on solutions that have immediate commercial value, whereas academia focuses on producing new knowledge through research and by imparting teaching to students. This collaboration will result in the rapid development of new breakthroughs. Capgemini’s India Country Board team members lauded the efforts of the professors and students in this regard.

Drawing parallels from the Industry-Academia collaboration work with Automotive IIP, we look forward to more fruitful collaborations with similar leading institutions in the future.
