Adobe Summit Day 2 – It’s All About Experience

Day 2 started early with Adobe CEO, Shantanu Narayen, addressing a packed room of more than 10,000 people.  He used his time on stage to inspire the crowd by highlighting some of the strategic initiatives that Adobe have delivered over the past year.  The framework of his message centered on experiences, and how companies need to deliver effective, engaging experiences to continue to win in today’s economy. 

What stole the show was a 2 minute demo of an Immersive Retail Experience with REI as the setting. This experience featured a connected bag that allows customers to have a frictionless shopping experience including a seamless checkout process with no associate involvement. The crowd went wild. 

The connected bag is an IoT solution for retail that leverages BLE and RFID technology that pairs with a mobile device to truly merge the physical and digital worlds.  Producing this bag, and the experience behind it was the result of a lengthy process of innovation.  In the middle of 2015, we had a couple of clients challenge us with a problem: How can they capture the richness of data that they have in-store that they have online? We worked with Iterate Studio, and were introduced to Twyst, Inc. Twyst is the producer of the bag and components that enable the reading of products when placed in. We quickly realized we needed a platform to activate the experience.  Enter Adobe.  

In late 2015, we engaged Adobe to explore the possibilities of working together to leverage the power of the Adobe Cloud Platform to ignite the concept, and demonstrate what an end-to-end immersive experience could be.  When the opening session concluded and the Community Pavilion opened, the crowds rushed to experience the Smart Bag and see how it works. 

It was supremely gratifying to hear the visitors to our booth really engage us to learn about the bag and the process of innovation that produced it.  Many exclaimed that this was “the coolest thing at the show”, and our team certainly feels good about it.  Our process of innovation includes 3 parts; Discover, Devise, and Sustain.  With it we are able to produce consistent outcomes and solutions that can be quickly tested, iterated, and ultimately deployed.

Topping day 2 is going to be tough.  I have little doubt that several hundred demos of the connected bag, an appearance by George Clooney, and a Weezer concert will help sustain the excitement.
