The typical Information Governance (IG) maturity curve runs on a scale of 1 (immature) to 5 (highly mature). Large organizations would fall apart if they didn’t have at least some IG in place already, even if it’s not formalized and known under the IG name. Boards typically like their companies to be at around the 3.5 to 4.5 mark (few organizations will ever need to be at 5). See diagram “The 5 levels of IG maturity”.
IG maturity should be measured against 12 distinct criteria, either per data domain or across all domains collectively, ranging from Data Quality monitoring, Group-wide business entity definitions and information security policies, to the use of external reference data, the definition of social data standards and a roadmap for future master data attributes (see diagram “The 12 criteria to determine your IG maturity”).
Broadly speaking*, if your enterprise does not yet have IG bodies to control your data assets, does not yet have fully functioning data protection processes in place and doesn’t have consistent definitions and data hierarchies covering all business functions it is unlikely to be at level 2 yet.
A large specialised UK manufacturing company recently moved from maturity 1.5 to 2.5 within just 10 months and are tracking to hit maturity 3.5 another 6 months down the road. Organizations should always know where their IG maturity stands, also compared with competitors, as it motivates them to strive for improvements.
