Many people like to be connected nowadays; we see it all around us and maybe even a are part of the trend. What is interesting is that the definition of “being connected” evolves all the time and it has started to be used more literally than before. Users are now “connecting” their own bodies to technology. They do it to understand more about their behaviours, about their bodies or just to have that feeling of wellbeing that only a gadget which is always within sight and touch can give.

Gathering data about surroundings and oneself is fascinating and gives a sense of control. Users are happily investing in training bracelets, high-tech watches, Google Glasses and many other wearable devices.

What to wear it with?
Gadgets are a fashion statement just the same as a new watch. Heads still turn at the person wearing Google Glasses – and perhaps that’s the reason they are being worn. The value of being connected and being seen to be “connected” has definitely gone past the utility of receiving the actual information.

Useful wearables
Technology offers wearers an extension of reality to connect to a greater awareness about the world around them.

Tempo’ is a wearable device which records data on the activities of elderly people. The data is sent to their caretakers who get warnings if the wearer’s behavior pattern is different, to alert for their help. For example, if the wearer starts spending less time on the activities they usually enjoy, this behaviour could indicate signs of depression and alert  the attention of the caretaker. The same happens if the time spent in bed increases or occurs at unusual times.

Wearables can help stop smoking by providing the desired nicotine dose or identifying gestures associated with smoking. They then send messages to discourage the wearer from continuing with their addiction.

Information about the condition of people suffering from epilepsy is now also possible through simply wearing a t-shirt. This makes caretaking non-intrusive and almost unnoticeable compared to the current routine of regular hospital visits to connect to a machine to get the same information.

From good to great
The exciting part about wearables is that they open the doors to unlimited creativity and options. There is an array of needs and pseudo-needs that are now being served, which is whetting our appetite for more. The application of this technology is seemingly limitless and it is becoming easier to collect the data through less effort.
And that is the true value of wearables. They become a part of you, they connect you and understand you, sometimes without even moving a muscle.
