Everyone in the Oracle business knows that you should keep track with the support matrix of Oracle, doing so is not simple. Every once and a while a major end of life step comes along and that means it’s time to watch out! This time is know with the Oracle Internet Application Server (Oracle IAS).

With the acquisition of BEA systems Oracle choose Weblogic as the strategic application server, for the Oracle Internet Application Server this means it will become end of life or almost end of life. The simple consequences of this end of life shows the following matrix:

If you have Oracle Internet Application Server then:

(Ext)ended Support?

Following the above schedule, support for above procucts is not possible anymore. It is possible to buy Extended Support or even unlimited support for the 10gR3 products. This means that the existing pool of bug-solution and fixes is available for you, new bug-fixes or new development will not be (or very rarely) made available. This extended support is only for the last version of the 10gR3 line, so be sure to be on the right level. All other versions will not be supported anymore, the request for support will almost always be answered with referral to the next version. You want to hear that when you’re having trouble in production?

The Solution?

The solution is simple, migrate to Weblogic and all your problems are solved (for now). The question is if it’s that simple and if you want to do that for all the systems that are on the above mentioned versions. Our suggested approach is:

  1. Get insight in all the versions in your landscape (if not already available)
  2. Decide for which applications/installations it is key to be supported
    1. Reasons for not wanting to be supported could be:

                                                               i.      No strategic applications

ii.      Application is already being replaced (work in progress)

iii.      We haven’t got any problem the last X years, so why bother

  1. Decide the plan of approach per selected application
  2. Execute.
