It’s normally tough to get sponsorship for events, and even tougher to get a full programme of speakers and topics agreed, so imagine my surprise to find not just one, but two events coming up with full programmes containing all the mainstream vendors. One is current and therefore can be followed online through the Bloggers that attend, and the other is in June 2009, but right now you can still read the fairly detailed synopsis of the individual speakers’ sessions in the full programme, and in so doing you can really get a great feel for the roadmaps and messages that they want to communicate.

Let’s start with the current event being held in San Jose on the 14th Oct and being sponsored by HP, speaker Tom Hogan, senior VP for HP Software, and SAP featuring Vishal Sikka their CTO. The title ‘The Cloud Summit’, sub title ‘defining the next generation platform’ and for once I am going to just take the following from the programme as the major track headings as they say all I want to say about the possible, or probable, issues that need to be addressed to understand the direction that Cloud Computing will take;

The cloud has been widely used to describe everything from internet-based computing utilities to SaaS and the web as a platform. This track will quickly acclimate you to the business of the cloud and help you to build a strategy for success.
Best Practices in Marketing and Selling
The Cloud is a vast, highly interconnected ecosystem of technology and services and will shatter established best practices around selling and marketing your business. There are many different strategies being used and explored and many lessons to be learned from some of the early leaders. This track explores the changing marketing and software models for companies doing business in the cloud. From direct verses indirect approaches to affiliate and strategic partnership programs, this track identifies current best practices in the changing world of marketing and selling a cloud-based business.
Exploring the Cloud In Action
The cloud is a rapidly changing business and technology ecosystem that is just at the beginnings of wide-spread adoption. As with any new model it is imperative to carefully monitor, measure and learn from early progress and results. This track features the early adopters of the cloud and some of the most successful customer models of success.

The second event is not until next June and is in Boston under the title of Enterprise 2.0, with the theme ‘The Enterprise 2.0 Conference Community comes together to examine big picture issues’. It is a huge event with five tracks over four days, and has sponsorship from IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, EMC, Sun, Novell and EMC at the event level, and track sessions from just about everyone who is anyone in the industry. Let’s start with the tracks;

  1. Enterprise 2.0 in action, case studies etc;
  2. Foundations for Enterprise 2.0, the technologies; (with the Cloud as the key theme)
  3. Leadership, the use of collaboration; (very focussed on Web 2.0)
  4. New Ways to Work; new organisational practices and business models,
  5. Social Tools for the Enterprise, a round up of what is available.

Amazingly each of the sessions in each track is already full detailed in some cases almost a page long synopsis as well as identifying the presenter and company. Study these synopsis and you get a really good idea of what the major technology vendor’s roadmaps and messages are. Not often you get a chance to see them all laid out so clearly!! The over whelming impression is that they are all bursting to get these messages across. Even better there are even a couple of cases studies in there plus at the event demonstration areas, workshops, etc. But I have saved the best to last; there is even a clear definition provided of exactly what is Enterprise 2.0!
