The road to the 5G connected vehicle

Safety, however, is paramount. Before autonomous vehicles can be embraced, both drivers and pedestrians must fully trust the cars we put on our roads. Manufacturers need to focus on solving the connectivity challenges facing connected vehicles. The cars must proactively communicate with other vehicles, pedestrians, and roadside equipment and manage unexpected live-traffic events.

The 5G connected car is emerging, and with it comes a reliable and effective real-time link to the internet, helping them predict situations and adjust to spontaneous emergencies. This is a big leap forward for safety as it enables Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication – a link between the vehicle and every peer it comes across on the roads, such as other cars and motorcycles, pedestrians, smart devices, roadside units like traffic lights and cameras, and power-grid components.

V2X realizes the potential of the connected vehicle. Advanced driver assistance systems can continue to evolve with a focus on V2X. The autonomous vehicles being made today will benefit from improved function and connectivity with the surrounding environment, better identify hazards to minimize the risk of collisions, and provide the peace of mind needed for society to embrace full autonomy.
