Manage application costs during a disruption intelligently

Even before the pandemic, businesses have had to deal with unforeseeable events and increasing budget pressures. The immediate reaction is to cut costs and review all processes in search of savings. But reducing expenses should not harm everything else.

The development and ongoing maintenance of business-critical applications are the greatest cost-reduction opportunities, and they can also improve the future agility of the business. Companies must think beyond driving down costs and find changes that support business objectives.

The tactics change with system type. Back-end functions, like HR and finance, are critical to operations and do not change often, so the usual methodology is to drive support and cost savings via efficiencies and automation. User-facing applications are handled differently, as they tend to be newer and smaller with more frequent updates.

The goal is to build more flexibility and agility into the system. The IT ecosystem is a complex and interconnected network and needs to be assessed before any changes are made. It is time to review key priorities and ensure they are tied to the business, so IT can be positioned to meet new challenges.
