Runches: A new way to connect, move, and recharge

Running during lunch might seem like a challenge, but for some of our colleagues, it has become a source of energy, connection, and motivation. This new practice, affectionately dubbed as ‘runch’ (run during lunch) unites colleagues for a mid-day run, creating a unique opportunity to break away from work, move, and bond outdoors in a fun and energizing way. Runch is quickly becoming a weekly favorite for employees who meet up every Wednesday to stay active and connect with their colleagues.

The journey behind the runch; From maternity leave to running shoes

The inspiration and driving force behind this initiative was Mathilde Bia, our colleague from Capgemini Engineering, who started her running journey after a significant life change. “After having my first baby, I realized I was moving more during maternity leave than when I was sitting at my computer all day,” she shares. “I felt great, so I decided to make some changes in my life, one of which was starting a running club here at Capgemini Engineering.”

Interestingly, Mathilde had never run in her life before! “It was a big challenge for me, not just to put the initiative together, but to start running myself,” she admits. After returning to work in September 2024 and with support from another colleague Nick Chavanu, she launched the ‘first runch’ in early October! Since then, the group has been running together every Wednesday at lunchtime.

The personal and professional benefits of runches

One of the key elements that make the runches special is how they foster a sense of community. For Mathilde, the goal was clear: “To share a moment with colleagues, get moving, and enjoy some fresh air.” Mathilde explains that being active gives her a mental boost as well, “It changes my mindset, brings so much energy, and helps me concentrate. “The benefits of runches go beyond physical health.

As Nick Chavanu puts it – “Running offers clear benefits for both physical and mental health. Moving my body during the day helps me reset and provides a boost of concentration and energy for the afternoon ahead.”

For Nico Bolen, another enthusiastic colleague, running during lunch isn’t just about fitness – “It’s a great way to clear up my mind and get energized for a productive afternoon. I’ve been running during lunch breaks for a while, even at customer sites.”

What keeps them going

The motivation behind the runches is simple but powerful: the joy of running together and the positive impact on well-being. Whether it’s the physical benefits, the opportunity to socialize, or just the joy of getting outside, employees look forward to their weekly runs and the moments of connection.

For Mathilde, it’s all about the feeling she gets after each run: “The joy and benefits I feel after each run keep me motivated to pursue it every Wednesday. It’s also very motivating to see my progress as a runner, especially with the support of the others along the way.”

Nick says, “Running with colleagues offers a wonderful opportunity to connect in a way that goes beyond the usual Teams calls or meeting rooms. Taking a break to get outside is quite refreshing, especially in winter when daylight is scarce.”

Nico shares a similar sentiment, saying “What keeps me motivated is definitely the team. Each week, I get to spend 30 minutes chatting with a set of interesting colleagues while getting some exercise. I believe that this kind of group runs offer a fantastic opportunity to network and connect with familiar colleagues while also meeting new ones.”

A New Community of Runners

What started as a personal initiative for Mathilde has grown into a vibrant, supportive community of runners at Capgemini. Every Wednesday, colleagues come together to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of running, while also strengthening bonds in a more meaningful way.
