“I love Capgemini because of an inclusive culture, career growth opportunities, great colleagues, and a mix of challenging local and global projects.”

What is your background and work history at Capgemini?

Hi! My name is Gitanjali Sahoo and this is my story of working at Capgemini.

I’ve now been in the Capgemini Finland team for about three years. I joined through the Young Professionals Program for full-stack software engineers in the cloud unit. It was a structured and high-paced program to kick-start your career in consulting. This program provided an excellent platform to understand the core values and culture that would later on enhance my personal and professional growth in the company.

Prior to joining Capgemini, I have worked as Software Test Developer at a global healthcare company and as Software Engineer at startups and larger companies in Finland and India. My study background is in Big Data Analytics, of which I completed a Master’s level specialization at Arcada University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki. I am now pursuing a Master of Engineering Degree in Information Technology at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland. I also have a Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology with honors from Biju Patnaik University of Technology in India.

What do you do at Capgemini Finland?

I am part of the Cloud People unit at Capgemini Finland. As a full-stack software developer, I’ve gotten to work in multiple domains and industries, including financial services, oil and renewables. As far as projects go, I’ve been involved in developing Portal and UI applications and security and maintenance services. I’ve also developed some DevOps best practices for source control in Azure cloud services.

My favorite project so far has been with a Finnish client in financial services. This one was assigned to me already during the Young Professional program. The project essence was to upgrade their web portal application. Initially, I thought this would need a few HTML page updates, but after analyzing the case, this turned out to be an update with several changes on the application and the server side. So, I got right into challenging work from the start of my Capgemini career. After intense work with the client and offshore delivery teams, we rolled out the solution better and stronger than before.

What does your typical day look like?

In my role as a Software Engineer Lead, a typical day starts with organizing and planning the work. I get to collaborate with others and of course code and develop solutions. In case of any unexpected incidents or service requests, me and my team resolve them according to the service level agreement. My tasks definitely vary from one day to another.

We work in agile teams, where we have frequent status meetings to share progress and status updates. I usually spend the morning hours on the tasks at hand, and in the afternoon take some time to plan for what’s ahead. Occasionally there’s a need to stretch the day, for example with project releases. Overtime is always agreed in advance with our Service Delivery Managers.

The best things about working at Capgemini?

I’m really glad that I joined this company that’s driven by people. In my experience, Capgemini provides various growth opportunities, helps maintain a healthy work-life balance, and supports during and after working hours. We have exciting events, like Himos ski resort trips in the spring and fun-filled team events in Helsinki for getting to know other colleagues. Oh and of course career events that help gain future insights.

The work is challenging and the projects make people’s lives better by transforming societies through technology, automation, or support in the cloud digital transformation journey. Projects vary from public to private sector. I have mostly worked with Finnish and Swedish clients.

Capgemini has also shown their support during COVID by strengthening the psychological safety of the teams and providing innovative ways to collaborate. They have sent chocolates, masks, a yoga mat, and water bottles to remind us to be safe and healthy, and to stay connected.

How about career development?

There are two career discussions with an engagement manager each year, where we get guidance on career development and can share our thoughts. I learn most of all while working on the projects and from great colleagues who are experts in their areas. And if I want to learn something more, Capgemini provides online resources like Pluralsight and Coursera for self-development. Every now and then we can also advance our careers by taking on-demand training on the latest trends and technologies. My latest one was a two-day virtual training on SAFe DevOps.

What is it like in the team?

All in all, the people here are very innovative, supportive, and helpful towards the growth of other team members. There’s a good culture of support here that motivates me and people around me to keep getting better at building the future we want.
