Capgemini enables Avinor with a smarter process for ice removal on airport runways

Avinor has the ambition to become a data driven company in order to achieve their future goals. Capgemini has implemented solutions for visualization and data capture based on Microsoft Azure. This particular solution provides Avinor the insight to improve the process for removal of ice on the runways.

The project was launched when Gardermoen Airport purchased new chemical pavers for the chemical cars at airport, and many of the other airports operated by Avinor – Øveraasen. With the new pavers it was possible to send data via the mobile network and out into the cloud,  Avinor, in collaboration with Øveraasen prepared a solution for transferring data so that Avinor could  extract the data to report on consumption and where the chemicals were distributed.
After a start-up and learning period where data was stored by a Swedish supplier and Avinor could extract them via traditional SSIS, it was set up for a simpler and more stable architecture where the Swedish supplier delivered data directly to an event hub in Avinor’s Azure-tenant.

Data was then extracted via Stream Analytics to a SQL database and then loaded into a tabular model to be read by a Power BI report.
This solution has been further enhanced with a Power App that draws data directly into Power BI. As part of the data flow, the location data from the vehicles together with the amount of chemicals and time was superimposed on a GIS map of the runways on the Airport.
