Davos is a mountain resort town in the Swiss Alps, located in the canton of Graubünden in eastern Switzerland. At 1,560 metres (5,120 feet), it is the highest city in Europe and was once a renowned health retreat – its flat-roofed buildings are a legacy of its sanatorium era. In 1894, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the British author best known for creating Sherlock Holmes, helped popularize skiing in Davos with a daring tour to Arosa.
