Bobcat builds new functionality on Oracle Cloud

Doosan Bobcat North America reached a major milestone with the go-live of Oracle Transportation Management Cloud hosted by Oracle Cloud Services

Doosan Bobcat North America is a compact construction equipment manufacturer headquartered in West Fargo, North Dakota. It is part of Doosan Group of South Korea, and leads the industry in the design, manufacture, marketing, and distribution of compact equipment for construction, rental, landscaping, agriculture, grounds maintenance, government, utility, industry, and mining.

Situation

Doosan Bobcat wanted to standardize its transportation management processes and better manage customer expectations regarding order delivery dates. In 2010, Doosan Bobcat licensed Oracle Transportation Management (OTM) and arranged for the application to be hosted by a third-party provider. After seven years of successfully utilizing OTM to increase transportation efficiencies, lower logistics costs, and improve customer delivery performance, Doosan Bobcat decided to update its OTM system deployment model.

Solution

Within an 11-week timeframe, Doosan Bobcat and Capgemini transitioned from an on-premise platform to a cloud platform. Some key tasks completed in this move were to:

  • Assess the As-Is deployment and landscape in order to identify any cloud incompatibilities
  • Redesign/reconfigure customizations and database packages that were incompatible with OTM Cloud
  • Re-direct the integration touchpoints
  • Make the legacy Reports and Fusion Transportation Intelligence (FTI) processes available on the new platform
  • Migrate the configuration and two years of transactional data from the legacy OTM version 6.3.4 platform to the OTM Cloud version 6.4.2 platform
  • Enable SMC3’s RateWare Webservices solution
  • Transition from Rand McNally Milemaker to the PC*Miler Webservices solution
  • Train the OTM Users regarding the new platform
  • Conduct comprehensive testing, which included System Integration Testing and end-to-end User Acceptance Testing.

Result

Doosan Bobcat is seeing many benefits with the transition to the Oracle Cloud Services deployment model.

The first is cost advantages. By moving to subscription-based pricing, Bobcat’s OTM licensing costs have been decreased and are predictable going forward.

Ease of ownership has also improved, as Doosan Bobcat now relies on Oracle’s Cloud Operations Team to maintain and secure its solution. As Doosan Bobcat’s OTM environments were transitioned from third-party hosting to being hosted by Oracle, there was no change in the need for IT support, and the high level of system performance has been maintained.

The company has also seen innovation advantages. With automatic updates (that include new functionality releases) being regularly deployed, Doosan Bobcat is now able to more quickly adopt innovative functionality that aligns with its business.
