Highway to Biodiversity: A Miyawaki Forest in Oeiras

Create a Brighter, More Sustainable Future

At Capgemini Portugal, we believe that building a sustainable future is a shared responsibility. Our commitment to environmental action reflects our dedication to protecting the planet and contributing to a better tomorrow.

Environmental preservation is one of the greatest challenges of our time. To secure a positive future for the next generations, we must come together and build strong alliances at all levels of society.

That is why, in December 2024, Capgemini Portugal strengthened its commitment to climate change mitigation by joining act4nature Portugal, an initiative lead by BCSD Portugal dedicated to promoting, protecting, and restoring biodiversity.

As part of this commitment, Capgemini has partnered with Grupo Brisa, Colégio da Torre, and Ilhas da Biodiversidade to bring a Miyawaki Forest to a highway gas station in Oeiras. This initiative transforms an unconventional urban setting into a thriving green space, demonstrating how even highways can play a role in biodiversity conservation and environmental restoration.
This project goes beyond planting trees—it redefines our approach to sustainability, inspires future generations, and creates a lasting, positive impact on the environment.
This project is not just about planting trees—it’s about redefining how we think about sustainability and green spaces, inspiring future generations, and making a tangible difference for the environment.

Our action at the event

This initiative brings together communities and organizations to transform an urban space into a thriving ecosystem using the Miyawaki method, which accelerates forest growth and biodiversity.

A Miyawaki Forest is a dense, fast-growing forest created by planting a variety of native tree and plant species close together. This method mimics natural ecosystems, allowing the forest to mature 10 times faster and become 30 times denser than traditional planting methods. These forests are highly biodiverse, self-sustaining after a few years, and ideal for restoring green spaces in urban areas.

With guidance from Ilhas da Biodiversidade, a dense forest was planted at Oeiras highway service station. Native plants and trees will create a mini-ecosystem, enriching the area and setting an example of how urban spaces can embrace nature.

Children from Colégio da Torre played an active role in the project, learning hands-on how forests grow and why biodiversity matters. We believe that by participating in these initiatives, the new generations will develop a deeper connection with nature and sustainability.

This project symbolises more than just planting trees – it is about creating a movement. By uniting businesses, schools and communities, we’re paving the way for a sustainable future.
