Making technology work for everyone

At Capgemini, our CSR efforts tap into the power of digital technology and partnerships to bring change and empower socially-disadvantaged youth to realise their dreams

Digital technology is at the core of what we do at Capgemini and how it can benefit more people on the planet, especially those at the fringes of society. Empowering those beneficiaries is where we make the most difference and truly meet our goals of digital inclusion and technology-led social change.

Tech4Positive Futures is our flagship programme that seeks to unlock the potential talent and
creativity of India’s underprivileged youth and children for the greater good, and to provide them with opportunities for personal growth. Our technological capabilities, networks and partnerships thus serve as a springboard for grassroots innovation that eventually drives social and sustainable development.

Here are some of the exciting projects that Capgemini CSR supports in this area:

One Planet Academy

A joint venture of WWF-India and Capgemini India, the One Planet Academy is borne out of shared
values and beliefs around environmental awareness in the country. With the belief that children are the future custodians of our natural resources, this venture works to promote conservation practices within schools, homes and communities across India.

CapSarathi

As part of our work in the areas of advocacy and enabling accessibility for persons with disabilities
(PwDs), Capgemini joined hands with the Sarthak Educational Trust to launch CapSarathi — a mobile app that serves as a one-stop source of information and services for PwDs.

CapSarthi seeks to positively impact the lives of thousands of PwDs — especially those in rural
India — and empower them digitally, economically, and socially. It is designed to cater to the
accessibility requirements of individuals with disabilities spanning 21 types of conditions and is available in six Indian languages – Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bangla. Currently, the CapSarathi app has around 30,000 active users. This figure could grow as support in more Indian languages gets added through future updates.

SahiCareer

Capgemini India, along with EBSC Technologies and its NGO partner Anirban Rural Welfare Society
(ARWS), launched SahiCareer, a digital career guidance portal, in February 2019. This portal provides counselling services to school students and job-seeking youth across India, through an AI-based career recommendation tool.

Through this project, SahiCareer and ARWS will build and/or provide several career-related roducts
and services that can be utilised by youngsters supported under Capgemini’s CSR programs, till
February 2024.

Project FARM

Project FARM (Financial and Agricultural Recommendation Models) has been developed by the Capgemini AIE vertical to provide on-time recommendations on good practices to farmers in West
Bengal through basic mobile phones. A solution conceived under the Capgemini Digital Inclusion – Tech for Good project, this initiative targets 500 farmers over a four-month period.

For example, farmers can access tailor-made advice to optimise crop production. Patterns from
available data can help steer commercial decision-making, and provide insights into potential
business risks. Information can also be provided to partners in the value chain, mainly providers of
inputs (such as seeds and fertilisers) as well as producers and buyers, thereby helping eliminate
inefficiencies.

NPTEL-IIT Madras

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) was launched by seven IITs
(Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati and Madras) along with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc) in 2003 to create online video courses in various disciplines of engineering, basic sciences, management and humanities.

The idea was to make available the best quality educational content from the faculty of premier institutes available to anyone interested in learning. NPTEL offers certification (at minimum cost) to students for participating in open online courses through its portal: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in/.

Capgemini pays for the certification fee for aiding students from economically weak backgrounds, and organises live sessions with Capgemini domain experts, industry experts and Capgemini campus visits for the NPTEL toppers.

HomoSEP – IIT Madras

Roughly 40% of households in India use toilets connected to septic tanks. However, their cleaning and repair are usually done by humans. Although manual scavenging was made illegal in India in 2013, the practice is prevalent due to lack of options, killing hundreds of people every year.

Capgemini has supported the development of a novel Sewer-line Inspection and Rehabilitation
System (SIRS). This robotic solution has been developed specifically for inspection and de-clogging of sewer lines, leveraging developments in the robotic homogenisation of septic tank contents into slurries through the HomoSEP technology, eliminating manual scavenging and its risks.

NSRCEL – IIM Bangalore

As an entrepreneurial hub at IIM Bangalore, NSRCEL brings together start-ups, co-working ventures, eminent academicians from its parent institute, and researchers to build an active
support ecosystem for early-stage entrepreneurs, serving as an incubator for new business ideas.
Capgemini has partnered with NSRCEL to develop a process that can identify, select, engage and
support early-stage social ventures with innovative solutions to tackle the country’s pressing social
problems. Those with high growth potential will be supported in developing robust business models for sustained impact.
