Capgemini UK achieves three-year lead in environmental excellence

Capgemini UK is still the only UK company in the IT and consulting sector to currently hold EMAS certification, giving it effectively a three-year lead over the rest of the sector. The company is part of the Capgemini Group, one of the world’s foremost providers of consulting, technology and outsourcing services.

The award of renewed EMAS certification follows an independent audit of Capgemini’s UK facilities, its ISO 14001-certified Environmental Management System  and of the data published in the company’s latest annual Sustainability Report. The audit was carried out by DNV Certification (UK-V0004), a company accredited by the UK Accreditation Service.

Highlights of Capgemini’s latest annual environmental performance, comparing 2012 with the base year of 2008, include:

• Data centre efficiency improved by 27%
• Overall emissions excluding data centres reduced by 22%
• Office energy emissions reduced by 38%
• Waste tonnage generated reduced by 34% since 2011 and by 56% since 2008
• Waste to landfill was 51% lower than in  2011 and 81% lower than in 2008.

Other key achievements in the latest Capgemini UK Sustainability Report include winning Green Travel Project of the Year for the company’s TravelWell scheme in the 2012 Business Green Leaders Awards, winning a ‘big tick’ for corporate responsibility from Business in the Community, and winning the top award in the 2013 EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres Awards for the outstanding environmental performance of the company’s recently opened Merlin data centre in Swindon, Wiltshire.
