Client Story

Capgemini builds the leading data analytics platform and SaaS service for the healthcare industry

Capgemini’s data analytics SaaS product is the leading platform for the healthcare industry and is utilized for such varied use cases as managing Unified Patient Journeys and tracking patient health outcomes. The product is completely designed, developed, and owned by Capgemini and is in production with 30-plus customers, including Takeda Pharmaceuticals. We are currently improving the product maturity with new cloud and SaaS components and a very active roadmap of feature enhancements.

Customer and problem statement

Leading biotechnology companies require a highly capable data platform to design and manage Unified Patient Journey solutions and serve as the single source of truth for such business-critical functions as health outcomes, invoicing, billing, and claims management. To provide real-time business insights, the platform needs to continually ingest data from hundreds of industry sources and perform a huge amount of data transformations and computations. In addition, the solution is best served as a SaaS platform with customer access to product and business functions including core analytical reports, billing, and invoicing through a customer portal.

Proposed solution and architecture

Capgemini partnered with 350-plus data providers to create accelerated file interface agreements (FIAs) and built the “one source of truth” data platform that is used by our customers daily for critical operations, including managing the patient journey, billing and invoicing, and benefits processing. The platform has been developed as a SaaS solution and is continuously being enhanced with greater SaaS functionality, including migrating our currently on-premises databases to the AWS cloud. Tools and technology used included Oracle RDBMS, AWS Boto3, EC2, S3, AWS API Gateway, and AWS QuickSight.

Outcome of project and success metrics

The project is in production with over 30 customers. We have an aggressive growth plan to both increase the number of customers and to extend the platform to use cases in other industries. Scalability, zero downtime, and performance of report building are the key metrics. We have contracted SLAs for all metrics and, as of now, are exceeding the SLAs.

TCO analysis performed

Extensive business valuation and due diligence processes have been conducted to ensure ROI and growth targets. All further Capgemini product development goes through an extensive stage gate-process for new projects. We have created a business plan for the next phase of the project that includes financial analysis (TCO analysis covering development and operational costs), a marketing plan, and a sales plan.

Lessons learned

Creating multi-tenancy must be an objective from the beginning of a project. Migrating from the silo model to multi-tenancy has significant challenges that must be solved well before undertaking transition. It is useful to have migration tools.
