Describe your current role and career progression at Capgemini.
I’m a Business Consultant in our People Transformation capability. I began my journey at Capgemini as a graduate in August 2017.
Along with my colleagues, I help our clients solve some of their most challenging problems. More specifically, as a part of our People Transformation team I help our clients think about how they can improve the experience of their employees to drive business results.
Explain a day in the life at Capgemini.
To me, there’s no such thing as a ‘typical day’ in the life of a consultant. Every day is unique and presents its own challenges and rewards.
Most of the time I’m based at a client’s office. I really enjoy the change of scenery this brings with each new project! The team I work with is different from project to project as well, giving me the chance to learn from a range of colleagues, each with a new set of strengths and perspectives.
At Capgemini, we remember to have fun while delivering serious results. We embrace learning together and solving problems collaboratively. I really enjoy working in an environment where I can grow while being responsible for solving real problems.
What do you love most about your job?
I have a few favourite things about my job!
I love the exposure I have to a large range of businesses and their unique challenges. I get a lot out of developing more sophisticated ideas through these experiences.
I also love the people I work with who are great people to be around, work with and learn from.
Finally, I love that I can define where I want my career to go and am encouraged to develop areas of interest.
How does Capgemini help support your career growth and aspirations?
At Capgemini, support is just around the corner. All you have to do is ask.
I really enjoy finding opportunities to improve Capgemini itself. For example, I’m a part of The Social Innovators, a new Capgemini offering. As part of The Social Innovators, I’ve been helping to define how we plan to help clients improve their Social Impact in the future. I really appreciate the opportunity to be involved in such meaningful work that has the potential to have such a large impact on the world.
In other cases, I’ve been involved with and even initiated smaller projects to improve how we work at Capgemini. These have been met with great enthusiasm and encouragement by others and I’ve been able to make a real difference to our workplace.
How would you describe the culture at Capgemini?
I’ve learned that striving work/life balance is a skill that can be developed. I’ve found Capgemini to be a supportive environment where I can practice it.
At Capgemini our values aren’t just some words in a policy that no one reads. They’re part of what we do on a day to day basis and they guide our behaviour, decisions and expectations of one another.
What advice would you give to women wanting to break into the IT industry?
Firstly, you’ve probably already done a lot of work to get to the point of wanting to enter the industry. While this work can come in many shapes and forms, your experience will be valued when you arrive.
In IT we’re not all technical developers. There are a range of skills required to make a project a success. We need people who can help our clients define their problems, people who can combine empathy and imagination to design the future, people who can design business strategies, people who have the technical skills to make ideas happen and people who understand human nature to help implement the ideas successfully.
My advice to fellow women is that if you know you’re wanting to enter the industry, whatever your experience is, you can use it to contribute. Think about your story and tell it to others when you find an opportunity to join their company.
Once you’re in the industry, there will, of course, be challenges along the way as there are in all career paths. Instead of struggling through them in isolation, I encourage you to reach out to others for advice and support. The moments when I’ve done this have been opportunities in disguise as they’ve helped me to build the foundations of meaningful relationships, helping me feel a sense of belonging.
