The Capgemini Global Data Science Challenge: Harnessing AI for a sustainable future

The Capgemini Global Data Science Challenge (GDSC) is an award-winning annual, purpose-driven hackathon that brings together thousands of participants globally.

During this challenge, teams dive into a real-world data science or AI use case, honing their skills while collaborating with seasoned professionals and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

Since 2016, the GDSC has been at the forefront of leveraging AI to tackle some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. The 2023 GDSC focused on protecting insect biodiversity through sound recognition. Participants developed AI models to improve the accuracy of insect identification and monitoring. In 2022, we automated the evaluation process for river blindness clinical trials, accelerating progress toward eradicating this debilitating disease. For the 2021 GDSC, we analyzed sensor data to unlock insights into ocean ecosystems and combat climate change. In 2020, our AI models identified individual sperm whales, aiding in their conservation efforts and preserving marine biodiversity.

These challenges demonstrate the immense potential of AI to drive positive change and create a more sustainable future for generations to come.

The Capgemini Global Data Science Challenge will be back in 2024

The Capgemini Global Data Science Challenge is an opportunity for experienced professionals to mentor the next generation, and those embarking on their careers get a chance to learn how to run a data science project by working on an actual AI use case and an excellent professional networking opportunity.

Throughout the challenge, participants:

  • Work on an actual data science/AI use case
  • Learn how to develop, improve, and interpret several machine learning algorithms
  • Learn how to run a data science project on AWS
  • Form a team, build their own solution, and compete against other participants
  • Provide results to the client/NGO for real-life implementation

These hackathons bring together the skills of experienced data scientists – professionals within our organization, as well as colleagues at leading academic institutions and other partners – and enthusiastic, creative, up-and-coming talent. Together, they accomplish great things.
