Tell us about your role. What does a day in your life at Capgemini look like?

I’m responsible for the management of a variety of people-related processes. So, a typical day for me could include supporting managers with difficult people-related issues, conducting exit interviews with those who have decided to leave the business, providing HR MI reporting for our executive team, and being the first point of call for all employee queries outside of those managed by our central HR function. It’s certainly a busy and fast-paced role, but I thoroughly enjoy it.

What’s the best thing about working at Capgemini?

I really appreciate that there is an open culture at Capgemini. Whilst we all work incredibly hard, there is a real sense of camaraderie and I genuinely enjoy being part of the team. The people are also fantastic and are clearly very passionate about the Capgemini Values.

What makes you proud to work at Capgemini?

I am really proud of our Active Inclusion strategy. We have come a long way and it makes me proud to see the number of employee networks and initiatives we have launched over the years.

Our mental health champion initiative was launched in 2018 and it gives everyone at Capgemini UK the opportunity to speak to someone independent in the business. They may be a completely different grade and work in a different business area and will provide signposting and support if you’re struggling.

Another example is our ‘Respectfully Us’ initiative that was launched in 2019. It was a program that encouraged everyone to stand up to inappropriate behavior by breaking the silence and reinforcing the message that we are up-standers not bystanders. We worked with an external agency to put together a video showing micro-aggression in the office, which then formed the foundation of facilitated conversations with people in the different business areas. The initiative has really helped people understand that silence is not golden and given them the confidence to speak up when necessary.

How are you working towards the future you want?

At Capgemini, you are encouraged to challenge the status quo. In my role, I am always encouraged to get involved in new challenges to further my development and I have a supportive team around me which enables that to happen.

I’ve been given opportunities to do things outside of my usual role and I’m working on something I’m very excited about. Getting involved has really helped me learn new skills for the future with regards to writing a new policy, going through the iteration process and working with different stakeholders in the business who I wouldn’t necessarily work with on a day-to-day basis.

Another example is supporting one of our VPs with the mental health agenda for Capgemini Invent, which is the area of the business that I work for. As part of mental health awareness week, we launched an Invent specific program of events and activities. Working very closely with the exec sponsor, leading a team of mental health champions and being a part of putting together the whole program was a really great knowledge-building experience invaluable to my future.

What advice would you give to someone joining Capgemini?

I would advise them to immerse themselves into the organization as it’s the best way to understand how everything works. Make sure you soak everything up in the first couple of months. Capgemini is a huge organization, and we have lots of different business areas, so I’d say take the time to really familiarize yourself with the culture, the language we use and our intranet, which is where everything is stored. The people are friendly and open to help, so I would also encourage you to learn as much as you can from everyone you meet!

How do you think Capgemini’s support has been since the pandemic began?

It’s been fantastic. We’ve been kept updated regularly through our managing director at Capgemini UK, with lots of updates, and the signposting to resources has been really good.

The home-working setup has also been great. We’ve got a mechanism in place to ensure that people have the right equipment that they need. Also, we launched ‘Capgemini At Home’, which is a Teams channel for people to share in general. People can talk about their hobbies and what they’ve been up to. If there’s anything going on in active inclusion or health and wellbeing, then that’s the channel that people would use.

We also have the Thrive mental wellbeing app, which is something I found really helpful. It has relaxation techniques and is designed to help with things like anxiety.
