Our sustainability journey: highlights from the Group Environmental Sustainability report 2017/18

Publish date:

Our actions on carbon reduction in 2017 pushed us halfway to reaching our 2030 science-based target.

2017 has been a great year for our Environmental Sustainability program. At the Group level, Capgemini implemented a number of strategies to reduce carbon emissions. We’ve come a long way in the past two years – since 2015, we’ve made an overall 15% reduction in emissions per employee, and implemented technology to reduce the need to travel as well as transforming our workspaces, driving down energy consumption to adopt a more collaborative and agile approach. We are focusing on a new responsible business strategy that reinforces our goal to help clients reduce their carbon footprint. We can proudly affirm that we are already halfway towards reaching our 2030 science-based target. Showing strong progress in this direction is making the differences that scientists say matter.

Travel and energy reductions through agile workplace and collaboration technology

Across the Group, we have reduced total energy use by 11% since 2015, driven by a 5% reduction in office energy consumption and a 25% reduction in data center energy consumption. The transformation of our workspaces to embrace agile and collaborative working has been an important part of the process, with 78 workplace transformations already delivered and a further 36 due to be complete by 2019. We’ve also made good progress on our travel footprint – reducing our travel emissions per employee by 12% since 2015. Key to our success has been the continued rollout of collaboration technology across the Group as well as a range of sustainable travel initiatives. In India, over 25,000 Capgemini team members shared car journeys to work using the app sRide, making Capgemini one of the largest users of the ridesharing app in the technology sector.

A bold new external target to help clients save 10 million tons CO2e

In 2017 during our 50th anniversary, we announced a new responsible business strategy – Architects of Positive Futures. The strategy builds upon and accelerates our work in the corporate sustainability space. Our Environmental Sustainability program is a key pillar of our strategy. We’ve announced a new commitment to help clients save 10 million tons of CO2e by 2030 through our products and services. We work with our client-facing teams to explore and use “technology for good.” This will create a step change in the organization about what it means to be a responsible business in the digital age.

Data and behavior change

Throughout last year and in recent months, I have spoken at several conferences, including Edie Live and the Responsible Business Summit, on two emerging hot topics: engaging people, and the importance of good data.  In 2017, we bought the two together through our first-ever Global Carbon Hackathon, which used the skills of our teams across 11 countries to answer how we can use the 10 million data points a year on our carbon footprint to effect change. The outputs from this are helping to shape how we use data in the future.

Evolution of environmental sustainability

Our 2017/18 report highlights the continued evolution of our approach to environmental sustainability. The report includes the roll out of a global environmental management approach – with 82% of our operations now certified under the ISO14001 certification. We also showcase the deployment of our Climate Change Risk Assessment Process, based on scientific research which aims to identify the exposure of our business to climate hazards and prioritize developing mitigation strategies where they are needed the most.

Please have a look at our report. I’d also love to hear your thoughts and questions on our approaches. You can reach out to me via my profile or connect with me on social media.
