Tell us about your role. What does a day in your life at Capgemini look like?

I run a testing department at Capgemini, so it’s our job to test and assure the quality of the work we do. That’s obviously paramount, but my day could consist of many different things. I’m often assessing work in the pipeline and allocating the right people in my team to each job, but I could be interviewing potential team members, providing prices for bids or working on our new internship program. Every day is a little bit different, which keeps it interesting and makes it a challenge at the same time. I’m learning every day I work and that’s great.

What’s the best thing about working at Capgemini?

My great colleagues. I love the way we combine our intellect and efforts to deliver a solution within the confines of our challenges, whether they be technological, budgetary or just a challenging client. We have fun whenever we work together. We learn together, go out together and eat together.

What makes you proud to work at Capgemini?

It’s the culture of Capgemini that makes me proud. I’m proud to be a part of it. It’s a people-driven culture, that encourages people to excel, learn, be true to themselves and have fun at the same time.

At Capgemini, I’ve been involved in a couple of projects that enabled me to increase my knowledge and skillset. During some engagements I developed a framework for testing Android applications, and I am currently working on one for IOS. During two engagements we also did a major overhaul of our reporting module, creating a very fresh-looking HTML report that is fully customizable.

I was also able to lead bigger teams than ever before which came with its own interesting set of challenges regarding recruiting, onboarding and training.

How are you working towards the future you want?

Capgemini has so many opportunities in so many areas, you have the freedom to forge your own path. You have people to ask for advice and mentors who work with you to create a plan that helps you achieve what you want for the future. In fact, I’ve been given the opportunity to prove myself as a department head, so I’ve been working as an interim department head for around three months. A decision will be made at the end of the year and for now, that’s the future I’m focusing on!

What advice would you give to someone joining Capgemini?

My advice would be to question everything. Sometimes people do things the same way for so long, they miss out on better ways of doing them. So, question every process that seems either out-of-the-ordinary, slow, or just too convoluted, you will either learn new things or be a factor for change.

How do you think Capgemini’s support has been since the pandemic began?

It’s been great. Capgemini is being very understanding and open regarding everyone’s individual situation and needs. Getting the equipment you need to work effectively is no problem and just before the holidays, we were supported with a mental wellbeing initiative. It’s easy to forget that many people are lonely and struggle with the holidays, so I thought that was a fantastic thing to do.

HR is always there to help, and even the department head of HR makes a point of getting in touch and asking people how they are really doing. But it’s not just management, we’re all trying to keep in touch with our colleagues, especially those who are alone on a project and don’t have a team of people around them. We try to get in touch with them and see how they’re doing on a personal level. That’s what the culture at Capgemini is like anyway, so it’s the perfect support during this pandemic.
