Woman of promise – Deborah Deepa D’Hauwer

20 Dec 2021

Recently nominated for the ICT Young Lady 2022, Deborah Deepa D’Hauwer is a role model and an inspiration for women. Having graduated with a master’s degree at twenty years, Deborah has her own charity that helps young girls getting into science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Capgemini has awarded with the ‘Women of the Future’ award for her outstanding achievements. She shares her experiences on winning the prestigious award.

Congratulations Deborah for winning the ‘Women of the Future’ award. Tell us about your experience.
Deborah: It’s an honor winning the ‘Woman of Promise’ award. However, it’s only because of the many great people around me at Capgemini and at Invent that I can be the best version of myself. I hope others will be motivated and encouraged to be themselves, and I hope my energy and drive are contagious.

How do you see this recognition shaping your career?
Deborah: It’s a good recognition for all the hard work, but I do not want to position myself as a role model. I am just who I am. And I hope others will reach out and connect since only great things are achieved within a team. It’s everyone’s strengths that deliver excellent results, not just the work of a sole person.

Who has been your role model?
Deborah: There are two and they go far back in history. First is Margaret Thatcher. I have always admired her for the work she has done in the political landscape. The second one goes even further back in history: I really look up to the women in Bletchley Park (UK) who decoded German messages.

What has been your biggest challenge in life?
Deborah: Battling stereotypes and being genuinely happy with whom I am, apart from other people’s expectations.

Any inspiring words for women who aspire to get this award in the future.
Deborah: To be sustainable as a person, do what you love to be and be who you want to be. That’s the key to a truly inclusive world.

Thank you, Deborah for sharing your experiences. Wishing you all the best!
