Engagement management

That feeling of ‘controlled entrepreneurialism’ is embodied in the Capgemini Values and I see examples of how those Values positively influence decisions and actions every day, with Ethics at the core.

Tell us about your role. What does a day in your life at Capgemini look like?

I’ve not long joined the Capgemini team and right from the first day (maybe even before!) there was no sense of feeling new or being an onlooker. And that was my experience in the middle of us all working virtually. In fact, I still have not met my colleagues in person but that has in no way hampered my onboarding or my feeling effective.

My role as Engagement Director is all about making things happen. Every day flies by, filled with client conversations, delivery team calls, discussions with partners and internal meetings. All these are focused on doing the right things for our clients and Capgemini. Fundamentally, it’s about creating good business, fulfilling promises and building relationships that are solid, open and sound with colleagues, clients and partners. I absolutely have the freedom to do this. That feeling of ‘controlled entrepreneurialism’ is embodied in the Capgemini Values and I see examples of how those Values positively influence decisions and actions every day, with Ethics at the core.

What’s the best thing about working at Capgemini?

It’s really the people. Without exception, everyone I have connected with has been supportive and expects that support in return. That really engenders a great culture – I can rely on my colleagues and they can rely on me.

What makes you proud to work at Capgemini?

That how we operate, treat our clients and colleagues, and reward and recognize our teams, properly embraces and puts into action our Values.

That has manifested in a number of ways over the last year and it really is something of which to be proud. I have seen many examples of people truly embracing our Boldness value. They have been braver than they would normally be and have taken leaps to obtain business or generate an idea, grow an idea, and put new ways of thinking forward for discussion.

Honesty is the Capgemini Value that I hold most true. A lot of our business is generated from good relationships with our clients and being honest is absolutely key to be being able to do good business in that respect.

How are you working towards the future you want?

At Capgemini, life really is what you make it. Tools and training are readily available, as is guidance and mentoring. But more than that, you are actively encouraged to challenge and take on new challenges.

My career is my own hands. I have the control on my development and am fully supported and encouraged by my reviewer and my colleagues. I support and mentor a number of team members and the fact that my newness to Capgemini is viewed as a big positive simply reaffirms that Capgemini listens to, embraces and creates change to keep modern for its team and clients.

My future is focused very much on building a reputation for creating effective relationships and delivering for our clients. The fact that I can operate autonomously, helps create that reputation. When I need assistance in achieving something new for my client, there is a huge library of resources and examples of best practice and guides that I have access to. You just reach out and talk to a few people who had worked on similar things. I was soon able to say, ‘This is what we did for another client, it worked, let’s have a discussion about how it would fit for yours.’ Capgemini might be a huge organization, but it doesn’t feel like that when you need some help.

What advice would you give to someone joining Capgemini?

Find out how Capgemini is structured, hone in on where you fit in, then draw out a strategy for networking. Start with conversations with the people joining at the same time and keep in contact with them regularly to share experiences. Join some of the Capgemini communities with which you may feel you have a connection. The conversation in some of those communities really is fascinating, thought-provoking and, in some respects, energizing, as its complementary to the day job. So be bold and embrace the freedom.

How has Capgemini’s support been since the pandemic began?

I joined partway through the pandemic and it’s been brilliant. My interviews went like clockwork, the toolkit worked, everybody was on camera for interviews, it was all very friendly, but also very relaxed, and so the interviews were absolutely fine.

Onboarding went just as smoothly, and once I started my role, there was a highly supportive management team, pointing me in the right direction. It’s good to know there are always people you can reach out to.

Capgemini is also very flexible when it comes to helping those who have young children at home. The support has been fantastic. Nobody is ever made to feel guilty in those circumstances, so people have been able to work comfortably.
