It\u2019s also a hotbed for innovation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, two Capgemini colleagues with expert knowledge of competitive sailing reveal three ways that technology will power the action at this year\u2019s competition in Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Martin is head of automation and robotics at Synapse, part of Capgemini Invent, and a former director of rules and umpiring at the America\u2019s Cup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Gerrit2.jpg?w=262\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1050876\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:200px;height:200px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Gerrit Bottem\u00f6ller is senior director in manufacturing and high-tech industries at Capgemini Invent \u2013 and also a world-champion racing yachtsman who represented Germany in the America\u2019s Cup in Valencia in 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem; letter-spacing: 0.4px;\">They consider the ever-changing design of boats, before looking at how innovation will bring better experiences \u2013 for sailing teams and audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:18px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-boats-will-be-even-faster-with-next-generation-engineering\"><strong>1. Boats will be even faster with next-generation engineering<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/230728_ETNZ_B2_D27_029-1-1-1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1050880\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:400px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRacing boats have been flying since 2013,\u201d says Gerrit. \u201cHydrofoils lift them out of the water to travel at speeds up to three times faster than they used to. Engineering innovation made the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can view every racing boat as an engineering problem,\u201d says Michael. \u201cAll the America\u2019s Cup teams are foiling now, and there\u2019s a limit to how fast the current foils will let you race. To stay ahead, teams need to innovate again. We\u2019re seeing foils being engineered that help boats maintain their lift and stop them dropping back down into the water and losing speed. Teams are also engineering the foil design and the shape of the boats\u2019 hulls to get them rising out of the water onto their foils sooner and in lighter winds, which means they will be at a top speed more quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gerrit adds: \u201cThere are so many parallels between innovation at the America\u2019s Cup and our work at Capgemini. You\u2019re always looking for the next step up in technology, and engineering that into a new product. It\u2019s how we keep moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-data-will-bring-added-excitement-for-audiences\"><strong>2. Data will bring added excitement for audiences<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/about-us\/transforming-sports\/the-americas-cup\/\">As a global partner to the America&#8217;s Cup<\/a>,\u201d says Gerrit, \u201cCapgemini is changing the way the fans can follow the live action, and how broadcasters can commentate. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/news\/press-releases\/capgemini-and-americas-cup-media-to-bring-a-new-dimension-to-the-37th-americas-cup-experience-with-windsight-iq\/\">WindSight IQ<strong>\u2122<\/strong>, developed by Capgemini<\/a>\u2019s engineering, data, and design experts, will visualize the wind for the first time. Live data about the wind patterns across the racecourse is used to create a visual wind field so commentators and fans around the world can understand what\u2019s happening on the water. It\u2019s a completely new way of seeing what\u2019s happening and who\u2019s most likely to win.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/m22057_Screenshot-2024-08-21-at-182742.png?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1050882\" style=\"width:459px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt will be a step-up in how data is used to add excitement for race audiences,\u201d says Michael. \u201cDuring any race, the wind undergoes continual changes in direction and speed. Traditionally, the only way you could detect that is by seeing it on the water, where a gust appears as a dark patch on the water. It&#8217;s really hard to see, so, with accurate live information, audiences will be able to see the best place to position the boats. They will have more information than the yacht crews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new WindSight IQ<strong>\u2122<\/strong> means that audiences will also be able to \u2018see the wind\u2019 and understand the best routes teams could take and compare them against their actual performances. It is a real feat of engineering and design, as up until now, no one has been able to truly visualize how the wind is affecting a race in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we develop innovations like this at Capgemini, the aim is to accelerate and improve the use of a real physical product or service through our super-strong understanding of data and algorithms,\u201d says Gerrit. \u201cIn this case, it\u2019s the racing boat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-digital-twins-show-how-teams-can-aim-for-perfection\"><strong>3. <\/strong>&#8216;<strong>Digital twins&#8217; show how teams can aim for perfection<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the technologies that is also set to make a difference for teams in this year\u2019s America\u2019s Cup is having a \u2018digital twin\u2019 of their real racing boat,\u201d says Gerrit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/m22056_Screenshot-2024-08-21-at-183639-1.png?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1050922\" style=\"width:645px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u2018digital twin\u2019 is&nbsp;a virtual representation of a real-world product or system, synchronized at a given frequency and level of detail. Basically, a virtual copy of a real-world thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy \u2018sailing\u2019 the digital twin against your physical boat, you train the team on the water to race to the real boat\u2019s full potential. For the engineers behind the scenes, data is brought from the real-world boat, so the digital twin learns and gets better.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA virtual simulator like this helped power New Zealand to victory in the last America\u2019s Cup,\u201d says Michael. \u201cNow Capgemini is also partnering with America\u2019s Cup to bring this type of simulation technology to the competition for the benefit of audiences. Using light detection and ranging (LiDAR), scientific computation, and sensors to reveal the wind, WindSight IQ<strong>\u2122<\/strong> is then being used to feed a live \u2018ghost boat\u2019 yacht simulation that broadcasters can project onto the racecourse through augmented reality, to show the optimal path teams could take around the course.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sailing-innovation-will-benefit-many-other-sectors\"><strong>Sailing innovation will benefit many other sectors<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe kinds of tech being developed to race boats faster will benefit other industries too,\u201d says Gerrit. \u201cIf you can engineer a boat to be more efficient, using no more energy but going three times faster, then similar tech could be used to develop other vehicles. Plus, being more efficient in the way we use power makes us more environmentally friendly. Sailing is a sport driven by wind \u2013 renewable energy \u2013 so what can we learn from it about how to use wind power elsewhere?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd as for the potential uses of WindSight IQ<strong>\u2122<\/strong>, it paves the way for AI-enabled micro weather forecasting, which has applications in fields as diverse as airport safety and forest fire management,\u201d he concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/37AC_230913_RP4_6662-1-1.jpg?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1050918\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSailing has a great culture of innovation, where everyone\u2019s learning and everyone\u2019s performance levels keep increasing,\u201d says Michael. \u201cThis positive culture works well in any environment, so there&#8217;s a huge potential for crossover into other areas.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s why we, as Capgemini, stepped into this,\u201d says Gerrit. \u201cIt&#8217;s not only to enhance the sailing tournament; it\u2019s for the bigger purpose. The America\u2019s Cup isn\u2019t about warring teams of sailors \u2013 it\u2019s about teams coming together in friendly competition of innovation and technology.
