I joined Capgemini Invent in March 2018 after working primarily in technology start-ups which culminated in me creating my own business based upon copywriting and marketing strategy for small organisations. I had limited experience with consultants as I hadn’t come across them before in my previous roles, so I was looking forward to all the training that was promised, and it didn’t disappoint. The induction was a tiring yet amazing whirlwind of knowledge that quickly got me up to speed in all the acronyms, processes, culture and expectations of the consulting world. Better yet, the consulting skills workshop (CSW) was a brilliant three days off site in Munich whereby some of the most experienced consultants taught you about the mechanics of a great consultant. Fair warning, it isn’t a walk in the park. They drop you in the deep end and expect you to swim, but you’ll have a friendly team to help you out whenever you need them.
My first project was a target operating model piece within a large UK bank. It was at first difficult for me to augment my working style to that of a consultant, but the team and my mentors helped me to understand consulting guard and how to deliver client ready work. By the end of the short 6 months I went from working under another consultant to owning my own work stream. Within Capgemini you will find that people care about your development and foster an entrepreneurial attitude.
My next appointment was within the Applied Innovation Exchange (AIE) which is Capgemini’s Innovation lab. Clients with problems that traditional consulting capabilities can’t solve get referred to the innovation lab where we strip the problem back and often use emerging technology to underpin complex solutions. I was able to stay in the AIE for approximately 6 months learning about innovation, new emerging technologies, service design, design sprints and much more. It was an invigorating experience where I learnt some valuable lessons.
My journey within Capgemini has been one of exponential personal and professional growth. The best thing about Capgemini are the people, you’ll never be stuck to find a friendly face in the office and people will bend over backwards to help.
