She brings the same curiosity to her new vocation at Capgemini, using artificial intelligence (AI) to uncover what lies beneath the surface.<\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/SG_20220203_102105-copy-e1646912328219.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-696677\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Gon\u00e7alves wasn\u2019t always a data engineer. In her previous career, as an archaeologist, she hunted dragons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-default\">The story goes like this: during one expedition, her team discovered a collection of swords from the Gallic period at an archaeological site in France. Identifying the artifacts was difficult until they deployed a piece of technological wizardry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:29px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hi-tech-histories\"><strong>Hi-tech histories<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t realize how innovative the sector has become,\u201d explains Sarah. \u201cArchaeologists routinely use tools that have evolved from the medical and military sectors, as well as data-led AI techniques.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using a process called tomography, which involves a huge imaging machine, Sarah and her team scanned the swords and made a thrilling discovery. \u201cSuddenly, we saw dragon engravings on the swords that had been invisible to the naked eye,\u201d she says. \u201cWe cried out with delight, because it confirmed the swords belonged to a specific culture, and the discovery would completely change our interpretation of the site.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-passion-for-the-past\"><strong>A passion for the past<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Capgemini_inside-stories_Louvre-museum-1.jpg?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-693901\" style=\"width:720px;height:450px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah studied archaeology at the Sorbonne in Paris, and went on to achieve an MA, specializing in wood and unfired-clay constructions from the Gallic period. She later worked for the Louvre gallery, helping to promote the wider discipline, and participating in several archaeological digs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While digs were definitely the most exciting part of the job, Sarah was always interested in the new technologies available to researchers. \u201cAs well as tomography, archaeologists use photogrammetry, augmented reality, and computer-aided design to analyze finds and map historical sites.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-winds-of-change\"><strong>Winds of change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/SG_IMG-20220203-WA0033-copy-e1646912257868.jpg?w=960\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-696678\" style=\"width:720px;height:431px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This interest would be crucial when Sarah took the decision to retrain, using some of the skills she had gained in the archaeological profession in a new career. \u201cA great deal of archaeology involves sifting through archives and referencing geological and topographical data. As I was already familiar with databases and how to analyze them, I thought I\u2019d try to enter the field of data and digital.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah joined the Microsoft AI School for nine months of intensive training, before undergoing a year of work placements at Capgemini\u2019s Insights and Data part of the business, which has a partnership with the course. Soon afterwards, she was offered a permanent job with Capgemini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-sense-of-service\"><strong>Sense of service<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my previous career, I loved working for public institutions on projects that helped society through greater knowledge and understanding,\u201d says Sarah. \u201cDuring my retraining, I realized a career in technology would allow me to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Capgemini, she is involved in building a data lake and AI tools for a public sector client to help automatically identify vessels that are worthy of further investigation. \u201cI\u2019m really pleased to be doing something worthwhile by helping the authorities work more effectively,\u201d says Sarah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-digging-the-data\"><strong>Digging the data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/IMG_2450-1.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-693903\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Sarah hasn\u2019t hunted any dragons recently, she feels there is a clear continuity between her current role and previous career. \u201cAs an archaeologist, you\u2019re searching for clues and digging beneath the surface to find treasures from the past. Now, as a digital engineer, I\u2019m using AI and data to reveal patterns and make discoveries \u2013&nbsp;I\u2019m still digging, but in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For her, there\u2019s a common characteristic that links the two professions: \u201cYou need to be curious, that\u2019s the key. The desire to seek and find things out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-positive-transition\"><strong>Positive transition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back on the two years since she retrained, Sarah feels proud of her evolution. \u201cI wasn\u2019t sure whether I could succeed in the technology sector or whether I would like it, but I love my work now,\u201d she says. \u201cAlongside my main role, I\u2019ve been a scrum master for the past year and I\u2019m in charge of onboarding newcomers to the project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, her experience in archaeology feels like an asset, giving her a broader, more contextualized view. \u201cCapgemini seems to really value my background, and I would strongly recommend to anyone who is considering a career change to jump at the chance. The digital field is now so diverse that, as long as you\u2019re curious, you\u2019re certain to find something you enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Sarah has had an idea to use AI to search for possible archaeological sites that are currently unknown by using an algorithm to sift through a database of geographical and topographical data. By using data from existing sites \u2013 proximity to water, mountains, valleys, and so on \u2013 she hopes to anticipate and locate sites that haven\u2019t been discovered, but which have the potential to yield artefacts.
