New wireless standards to support tablets and smartphones.

Increasingly, users want to make use of “mobility” – a wide-ranging term that encompasses the use of different devices in different ways that suit our particular location, always imvolving some type of wireless connectivity. We expect instant connectivity, full coverage and high speeds – the mobile broadband standard – and are disappointed when it doesn’t happen. The industry has been following 2 paths to try to meet and exceed expectations. On the one hand, extending the concept of WiFi to become WiMax, and on the other, extending 3G with the all-new LTE standard. This month’s Technology Brief describes both these trends alongside the usual round-up of industry news and events.
