Advantages and disadvantages of adopting network sharing infrastructures.

While the large operators in Western Europe have instigated advanced active network infrastructure sharing and outsourcing, telecom operators in developing markets are now beginning to look into such alliances that would help cut down coverage costs and speed their expansion into rural areas. India has already witnessed network sharing initiatives, while the Middle East and Africa is expected to see such alliances in the near future. Although tower sharing offers significant potential for cost savings for both incumbents and new entrants, it is accompanied by risks such as reduction in strategic control and potential for information leaks. In addition regulators face the challenge of ensuring a level playing ground for all operators with no threat of cartels.

Capgemini’s analysis presents specific approaches to tower sharing/outsourcing for incumbents and new entrants, both in rural as well as urban areas.
