The possible benefits are manifold \u2013 reductions in accidents arising from human error, reduced cost &amp; environmental impact of transport, liberation of time currently committed to driving, and accessibility to a wider range of users are all theoretically addressable.<br><\/h2><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-12 col-md-11 col-lg-10 offset-md-1 offset-lg-1\"><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<p>Based on this context, key challenges must be overcome to achieve this vision:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Assurance of systems and software:<\/strong>&nbsp;How can we define and demonstrate the right level of acceptability?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sensing and Connectivity:<\/strong>&nbsp;How can we ensure the right relationship between a vehicle and its environment?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Judgement:<\/strong>&nbsp;How can automated systems exercise judgement?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Architectures for managing complexity:<\/strong>&nbsp;How can we manage the resulting system complexity?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verification &amp; validation:<\/strong>&nbsp;How much testing do we need, and how can we achieve it?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>On this market context and this analysis, a number of implications and approaches to overcome these challenges can be considered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The ultimate acceptability of autonomous vehicles<\/strong>&nbsp;will be a societal and political decision; consequently those involved have a duty to be transparent about their choices and the rationales for them.
