Aleksandra, a Fullstack and R Developer at Capgemini, tells us how she pulls off this double act.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>What exactly do you do at Capgemini?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">I used to be a Fullstack Developer on one project, but today I\u2019m in a totally different one &#8211; for a foreign financial institution &#8211; and in a completely new role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Officially, I\u2019m a Senior R Developer, which is a fresh experience for me. I used to program in Java and Angular, but here I stepped into R, a language tied to data analysis. We prepare reports based on macroeconomic data. So, it\u2019s a role that borders on typical programming and data analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>Can you really &#8220;test drive&#8221; a new skillset at Capgemini like that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Yes, the firm is unique in that regard. It supports us with targeted training and access to projects where we can apply that knowledge in practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">In my case, it was possible because I\u2019m also doing a PhD in Computer Science at Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna\u0144, in the field of AI and ML. As part of my doctorate, I work a lot with Python. I worked on a grant project in Angular, and I also had contact with the niche language R. So, when my previous project ended, the client needed someone who knew R. Since I had that academic background, jumping into this role was much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>Are you more of a scientist or a programmer?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">I blend these two areas, and they complement each other very well, so I can&#8217;t define it that unequivocally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>And what is the most interesting thing for you in this new role?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">The whole programming bit. I won&#8217;t hide that there was a bit of chaos on the programming side of the project; good practices were missing. So, when I entered this new project, I immediately started thinking about optimization. <em>&#8220;Right, let&#8217;s do this better, write code more clearly&#8221;,<\/em> I told myself. Now I`m responsible for what the final product will be and what code will power it. I feel I can leave my mark, and that\u2019s important to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>What do you need to know to handle such projects well?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">You need to communicate well and be very open. You must be able to chat, call, and ask where to get knowledge from. It often happens that project documentation isn&#8217;t linked anywhere, but everyone knows it exists. And you have to know how to dig it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>How much does your academic background help?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">During the pandemic, many firms popped up offering various IT products, such as remote-work support. Back then, one language and a narrow specialization were enough to have your pick of offers. Now, that is changing a bit. Of course, you can still have an interesting career in a narrow specialization. However, in large projects, such as cloud implementation, security, or database management, broad knowledge is required. And here, my academic background is invaluable. I\u2019d say formal education is making sense again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>I kept hearing that a good developer has to be a good strategist. What do you think?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">So true! Anyone who knows the syntax can write code, but a Senior must be able to predict which scenarios might go wrong and how to secure against them. They must be able to draw the correct conclusions to optimize the process, rather than following the same bad path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>One can tell that you aren&#8217;t indifferent to this job. What emotions accompany you daily?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">Mostly &#8211; curiosity. I have moments where I feel a tingle thinking about whether I\u2019ll manage to solve the problem I was stuck on yesterday. Often, I simply feel calm, which stems from high-quality work and a lack of pressure to do something faster, better, and cheaper at once.&nbsp; And then there is the enthusiasm, because there is so much more to discover in IT.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">That\u2019s my private podium!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>How do you manage, pardon the expression, not to go mad with two parallel careers? I say openly that I have to leave for two hours because I have classes at the university, and the firm accommodates me. I have never heard &#8220;no&#8221; from a manager regarding flexibility. That really helps me avoid going mad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\"><strong>And what is the firm\u2019s development plan for you?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">At Capgemini, this is very important. You talk with leaders about &#8220;what&#8217;s next&#8221;. If I want to take on another project in Python, I let the manager know and they look for a project where I can apply that knowledge in practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:17px\">I also participated in leadership training focused on strategic thinking.
