No, this isn&#8217;t the plot of a new Netflix series, it\u2019s the story of Dima Zaichenko.<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you a programmer by education?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, far from it. I\u2019m a swimming coach, a graduate of the University of Physical Education, but computers always intrigued me &#8211; how they are built, how they work. I like to understand how the world around me functions because, by nature, I am very curious. So, when the pandemic stripped me of my job almost overnight, I decided that instead of wringing my hands, I would use that time to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It certainly couldn&#8217;t have been easy. Where did you find the strength?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It came from a deep sense that I needed a change. Working with people was already becoming very draining for me. As a swimming coach or aqua-aerobic instructor, I was burned out. So, on the one hand, the time was tough, but on the other hand, I felt something had to change. In the long run, I wanted a more stable job in a future-proof industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, how did you end up at Capgemini?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the lockdown, I started learning to code on my own. I watched YouTube videos, and then &#8211; as if my situation wasn&#8217;t crazy enough &#8211; I spent part of the savings meant for a house deposit on a year-long programming course. I learned enough to start looking for a job as a programmer. I chose Capgemini because the interviews were straightforward, casual, and without pressure. I got honest feedback, and the recruiting team saw potential in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What was your first role, and what are you doing now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I started as a Junior Frontend Developer. However, I quickly developed into a Fullstack role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Easy to say, harder to do. Where did you get the knowledge?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without exaggeration, I acquired all my backend knowledge here, at the firm. On one hand, if I didn&#8217;t know something, I asked others. On the other, I regularly used funding for training &#8211; that\u2019s how, for example, I learned NodeJS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, I work for a foreign bank, creating a web app for ordering YubiKey authentication keys. What can I say, I\u2019ve drifted a long way from what I was doing before the pandemic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>And what is the most interesting technical challenge in your role?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, it\u2019s working in a completely new stack &#8211; I had to quickly switch gears from React to Vue.js. Luckily, at Capgemini, you aren&#8217;t alone with such challenges. Together with my manager, we defined what training I needed. I gained the theory there, and the practice came with the projects. Actually, I believe the advantage of this job is exactly that: it allows you to combine the most up-to-date knowledge with client projects where you can actually use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What skills does a candidate need to succeed in a position like yours?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good English and communication skills are the most important. If we misunderstand the client, we waste their time, the firm&#8217;s time, and on top &#8211; our own. That\u2019s why communication skills are critical. Programming and technical issues can always be learned or polished.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to openly admit you don&#8217;t know something is also mega-important. At Capgemini, such a declaration is well-regarded and opens doors to new training rather than closing them. We work in a transparent, very safe atmosphere. Everyone here truly understands that it\u2019s better to define what we lack than to pretend we have competencies we don&#8217;t actually possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do you like most about your project?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenge! I\u2019m working with a stack that\u2019s new to me &#8211; building an app in Vue.js for the first time. But looking at my history, you can see I\u2019m not afraid of challenges, and neither is the firm. I\u2019m happy that the app I\u2019m making is used by hundreds of thousands of people. And I\u2019m especially proud that I\u2019m working on accessibility. Thanks to my code, the application is accessible to blind users via screen readers and keyboard navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What do you do when you aren&#8217;t coding?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spend time with my wife, hit the gym regularly, and I\u2019ve returned to the swimming pool &#8211; I\u2019m coaching people again. I found the pleasure in it again, and I\u2019m glad the firm supports me in this. For me, this is key because I experienced burnout and don&#8217;t want to repeat it.
