hummingbird<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the story of an elephant and a hummingbird that partly inspired Peggy Bouyon, digital analyst based at Capgemini\u2019s Nantes office, in France, to create a new card game to help colleagues understand how technology impacts the environment \u2013 and what steps they can take as individuals to alleviate elephant woke up to find a huge fire burning in the jungle. While running away, he saw a hummingbird flying towards the fire, carrying a tiny bucket of water. &#8220;Why are you doing that?&#8221; asked the elephant. &#8220;That won\u2019t achieve anything!&#8221; The hummingbird replied: &#8220;Maybe not. As well as breaking the ice, it frames any new project in the context of how technology impacts the environment, while assigning certain responsibilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each pack contains several different cards: Actor (like a project manager or developer), Impact (how technology impacts the environment, for instance e-waste), Objective (a shared goal by the whole team), and Action (a specific goal assigned to an individual).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-wrapper-card-text-pic wrapperCardTextPic hero-bg-shape\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-12\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-card-text-pic-right row card-text-pic rightCard\"><div class=\"row card-text-pic rightCard\"><div class=\"col-md-12\"><div class=\"box--section\"><div class=\"box  row-nobleed\"><div class=\"col-lg-8 col-md-12 box-inner\"><p class=\"box-text\" data-maxlength=\"600\">\u201cThe idea is to match an Action to an Actor, so that each person ends up with up a concrete goal for the duration of the project,\u201d explains Peggy. Meanwhile, figures had suggested that IT power consumption could reach&nbsp;20% of global electricity demand by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe included this information on the Impact cards, and during the game, people are assigned Action cards, giving everyone a concrete objective to help tackle the problem. This helps break down a daunting issue into specific, manageable actions,\u201d says Peggy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-harnessing-gamification\">Harnessing gamification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Peggy\u2019s view, approaching this issue through the form of a game makes sense on several levels. Her experience designing workshops taught her that using physical cards with an element of play helps people learn faster \u2013 and builds stronger memories than a PowerPoint deck or presentation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-wrapper-card-text-pic wrapperCardTextPic hero-bg-shape\"><div getting people to become \u2018actors\u2019, rather than staying passive, and creating a shared understanding of an objective,\u201d she says. \u201cIt&#8217;s also really effective for engaging younger people who enjoy learning through games, particularly on issues they feel strongly about.\u201d<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-cg-blocks-group undefined section section--article-content\"><div class=\"article-main-content\"><div class=\"container\"><div class=\"grid-container\"><div><div class=\"article-text article-quote-text\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-grassroots-initiative\">A grassroots initiative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The card game idea came out of discussions with her manager. \u201cWhile Capgemini has a corporate ambition to achieve a net zero transition, we started to consider what we could contribute as a team,\u201d says Peggy.&nbsp;<br><br>Peggy has received some great initial feedback on the game, and wants to keep improving it. \u201cWe\u2019ve approached the project with a crowdsourcing mentality, encouraging anyone with a good idea for a card to get in touch.\u201d&nbsp;<br><br>In a separate initiative, Peggy\u2019s team gave prizes to people for reducing their email inboxes. \u201cNot many people know that emails, particularly those with large attachments, take up storage space in data centers, which are very energy intensive,\u201d she says&nbsp;<br><br>Through such fun and engaging formats, Peggy and her team have demonstrated how we can reduce technology\u2019s environmental impact through individual actions \u2013 to build a future that works for everyone.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section>\n\n\n\t<section data-maxlength=\"330\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s early days, but with help from Maud\u00a0Par\u00e9, Capgemini\u2019s head of sustainable IT in France, Peggy is hoping to see the game picked up by other French offices. \u201cThe cards have been designed for use in a business environment, and it would be great to use them with our clients,\u201d she says. \u201cBeyond that, I would love to see other countries creating their own-language versions of the game.
