De Zuid-Afrikaanse Marthinus Bosman (27) ging ervoor. Voor een baan bij Capgemini verhuisde hij afgelopen herfst met zijn vrouw naar Nederland. \u2018Ik hoefde alleen te wennen aan de Nederlandse winter.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Van wijnhoofdstad Stellenbosch in Zuid-Afrika naar het rustige stadje Bennekom vlakbij natuurgebied de Veluwe. Het contrast kan bijna niet groter. Senior machine learning specialist Marthinus is een gelukkig mens. \u2018Ik wilde graag in Europa werken. In eerste instantie in Zwitserland, omdat ik veel samenwerkte met een bedrijf daar. Maar Zwitserse bedrijven vonden de administratieve rompslomp van een emigratie te groot. Toen kreeg ik ineens bericht van Capgemini: wil je naar Nederland komen? En of ik dat wilde! Ik was al eens in Nederland geweest, die bezoekjes bevielen goed. Bij het emigreren naar een ander continent komt veel kijken. Capgemini ondersteunde ons hier goed bij. In Zuid-Afrika volgden we Nederlandse les, om alvast een basis te hebben. In twintig lessen oefenden we Nederlands spreken en schrijven. Capgemini betaalde die lessen, net als onze vliegtickets. De woonruimte in Bennekom vonden we zelf. Een fijn huis in het groen, niet in een grote stad. Precies wat we wilden.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fijne werkcultuur<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Ik start mijn werkdag als een Nederlandse forens. \u2018s Ochtends fiets ik naar het station, om vervolgens in de trein mijn laptop open te slaan. In Zuid-Afrika kan je niet buiten een auto, hier kan je prima zonder. Wennen bij Capgemini, dat was niet nodig. Mede dankzij de taallessen die Capgemini voor me verzorgde, kan ik me inmiddels zakelijk goed redden in het Nederlands. Dat geldt voor mailen en het volgen van gesprekken. Spreken vind ik lastiger \u2013 daar ga ik nog wat extra lessen voor nemen.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nieuwe oplossingen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Ik koos natuurlijk niet alleen voor Capgemini vanwege de locatie. Ook de functie sprak me enorm aan. Als machine learning specialist help ik bedrijven om meer inzicht te krijgen in de mogelijkheden die machine learning biedt en hoe de methode hun processen kan verbeteren. Ik ontwikkel de infrastructuur en frameworks, zodat elke medewerker ermee kan werken. Doordat ik aan korte projecten werk \u2013 meestal duren ze een jaar \u2013 kan ik vaak aan nieuwe oplossingen werken. Ik ben onder de indruk van de moderne ICT-infrastructuur van onze opdrachtgevers, en hun enthousiasme over nieuwe technologie\u00ebn. Zo zijn veel bedrijven ge\u00efnteresseerd in Large Language Models zoals ChatGPT. Maar weinigen zullen \u00e9cht de behoefte hebben om hun eigen model te bouwen, maar er zijn veel andere toepassingen voor hun modelarchitectuur.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI-hackathon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Ook de aandacht voor duurzaamheid was een belangrijke reden om voor Capgemini te kiezen. Ik doe momenteel mee aan de Global Data Science Challenge, een hackathon van Capgemini waarbij we werken aan een echte AI-case. We ontwikkelen een tool die insecten identificeert met geluid. Insecten zijn een belangrijke indicator van biodiversiteit. Hoe meer vari\u00ebteit, hoe beter het ervoor staat met biodiversiteit.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Op weg helpen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Bij Capgemini werken maar liefst 150 Zuid-Afrikaanse expats. Nederland is vooral populair vanwege de taal: Nederlands en Afrikaans liggen dicht bij elkaar. Capgemini heeft daarom speciaal een WhatsAppgroep aangemaakt voor collega\u2019s uit Zuid-Afrika. We helpen elkaar op weg. Van vragen over de belastingaangifte en het kopen van een huis tot in welke supermarkt je bepaalde producten kan krijgen; echt alles komt voorbij.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nederlandse gebruiken<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Mijn vrouw en ik hebben veel vrienden gemaakt, zowel Zuid-Afrikaanse als Nederlandse. Ik startte tegelijk met drie landgenoten bij Capgemini, met hen ben ik goede vrienden geworden. Er zijn grappige verschillen tussen hoe Nederlanders en Zuid-Afrikanen tijd met elkaar doorbrengen. In Nederland word je uitgenodigd om iets specifieks te gaan doen, zoals een bordspel spelen of samen eten. Is het spel klaar of het eten op, dan ga je naar huis. In Zuid-Afrika breng je langere tijd met elkaar door, waarin je eet en kletst.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wennen aan de winter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Het enige wat tegenvalt, is de winter. Die hebben we echt onderschat. En het was nog niet eens een strenge winter. Gelukkig wees een collega ons op het bestaan van vitamine D-pillen, die hebben ons humeur gered. De Nederlandse lente was dan weer een hoogtepunt. We vertrokken in mei voor een trouwerij naar Zuid-Afrika. Bij terugkomst was onze kale tuin een en al groen, net als de rest van Nederland. Prachtig!\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018We zijn nog lang niet uitgekeken op Nederland en blijven nog wel een tijdje. We hebben zelfs besloten om een huis te kopen. Op den duur willen we wel terug naar Zuid-Afrika, ook vanwege onze familie. Maar we hebben geen haast. Misschien blijven we wel tot ons pensioen.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.capgemini.com\/nl-nl\/carriere\/kom-bij-ons-werken\/vacatures\/\">Benieuwd naar wat Capgemini jou kan bieden?<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-of-course-i-wanted-to-come-to-the-netherlands\">\u2018Of course I wanted to come to the Netherlands\u2019<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A new job on a new continent; the South African Marthinus Bosman (27) wasn\u2019t afraid of the challenge. He moved to the Netherlands with his wife last autumn to take on a job at Capgemini. \u201cBut I had to get used to the Dutch winter.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From South Africa\u2019s wine capital of Stellenbosch to the quiet village of Bennekom near the forests of the Veluwe: a bigger contrast was hard to imagine. But senior machine learning specialist Marthinus is a happy man. \u201cI was eager to work in Europe. My first choice was Switzerland, because I\u2019d worked a lot with a company there. But Swiss companies thought that the paperwork for emigration was too much of a burden. That\u2019s when I got a message from Capgemini: would I be willing to come to the Netherlands? Of course! I\u2019d already been to the Netherlands, and I enjoyed my visits. And I have Dutch roots \u2013 my last name is Bosman, after all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dutch lessons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFrom arranging a visa to registering with the municipality: emigrating to another continent is a lot of work. Fortunately, Capgemini supported us with that. We took some Dutch lessons in South Africa, to learn the basics. We had twenty lessons to practice speaking and writing in Dutch. Capgemini paid for the lessons, as well as our airplane tickets. We found our house in Bennekom on our own. It\u2019s a nice house in a green neighbourhood, not in the big city. Exactly what we were looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pleasant work culture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI start my day as a typical Dutch commuter. I cycle to the station in the morning, then open my laptop on the train. You need a car to get around in South Africa, but here you can do just fine without one. I didn\u2019t have to get used to working at Capgemini. Thanks to the language lessons Capgemini arranged for me, I can also get by with Dutch for business. That\u2019s handy for e-mails and listening to conversations. Speaking is a bit more difficult, so I\u2019m going to take some extra lessons for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New solutions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t just choose for Capgemini because of the location, of course. The position also really appealed to me. As a machine learning specialist, I help companies gain more insight into the possibilities machine learning offers, and how it can improve their processes. I develop the infrastructure and frameworks to make it easy for all employees to make use of machine learning. I work on short projects \u2013 usually around a year \u2013 so I get a chance to work on a lot of new solutions. I\u2019m impressed by our clients\u2019 modern IT infrastructure, and their enthusiasm about new technologies. A lot of companies are interested in large language models like ChatGPT, for example. Few of them really have a need to build their own model, but there are a lot of other applications for their model architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI hackathon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe focus on sustainability was another important reason for choosing Capgemini. I\u2019m currently participating in the Global Data Science Challenge, a hackathon organised by Capgemini where we work on a real-world AI case. We develop a tool that identifies insects by their sounds. Insects are an important indicator of biodiversity. The greater the variety, the better for the biodiversity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping each other<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt least 150 expats from South Africa work at Capgemini. The Netherlands is especially popular because of the language. Dutch and Afrikaans are closely related. Capgemini has created a WhatsApp group especially for colleagues from South Africa. We help each other find our way here. From questions about tax declarations or buying a house, to which supermarkets sell certain products; we use it for everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dutch customs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy wife and I have already made a lot of friends, both Dutch and South African. I started working at Capgemini at the same time as three other South Africans, and we\u2019ve become good friends. There are some funny differences in how Dutch people and South Africans spend time together. In the Netherlands, you get invited to do something specific, like play board games or have dinner. When the game is over or the meal is done, everyone goes home. In South Africa, we spend more time together, eating and talking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting used to winter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe only thing that was a disappointment is the winter. We really underestimated that. And it wasn\u2019t even that cold this year. Fortunately, one of my colleagues told me about vitamin D pills, and they made a big difference in our mood. It was a relief when spring finally arrived. We went back to South Africa for a wedding in May, and when we got back our bare garden was lush and green, like the rest of the country. It was beautiful!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still nowhere near bored with the Netherlands, and we plan on staying for a while. We\u2019ve even decided to buy a house. But we do want to go back to South Africa eventually, in part because our family is still there. But we\u2019re not in any hurry.
