The subprime crisis marked a clear end in 2008 to positive trends in the mortgage market, with an explosion in funding costs having a severe impact on mortgage profitability. To ensure banks are prepared for the challenges ahead, retail banks will have to implement significant changes and develop more effective mortgage profitability models, according to the World Retail Banking Report 2009 from Capgemini, UniCredit and the European financial management and marketing association (Efma).
