Job Title: Unix Server Support Engineer
Indicative Grade (Range): i6
Discipline Managed Services, IMS
Business Unit: DSS
Working Pattern: Full Time (will involve some out of hours work)
We are currently looking for a Unix Server Engineer to join the Unix Server support team. Within this role you will be responsible for the day to day management and support of a large-scale enterprise servers. Server Technicians are required to work to a shift pattern that spans 08:00 – 18:00. This is also a requirement for on-call support and out of hours work.
SC Clearance Eligible or NPPV2.
Support for UNIX e.g. HP-UX, Sun Solaris, IBM AIX, etc. and associated server hardware support with the help of OEM or 3rd party vendors.
Why this role
The resolving teams will implement changes to configuration items in accordance with the agreed change records.
Details of the change will be recorded in the change management system.
Incident Resolution The resolving teams will investigate, diagnose and restore the affected service as notified by tickets raised through incident handling in accordance with service levels.
Details of the incident and resolution will be recorded in the incident management system.
Incidents include those relating to:
Diagnosis of hardware issues
Locally attached storage.
Problem Resolution According to the problem management process, the resolving teams will prevent (re)-occurrence of incidents by eliminating their root cause.
Details of any problem management activities will be recorded within the problem management system.
Configuration Administration As part of change execution for those items in scope of the service, the service provider will supply the necessary configuration information to the Asset/Configuration management team.
Updates to the configuration tool will be performed where access and process are provided and made available.
Virtual Machine Configuration Support The resolving team will manage the day to day virtual infrastructure, including but not limited to:
Allocation/deallocation of Storage LUN's through Virtual adapters
Resource Pools and resource management.
Non OS Backup and Recovery The resolving team will manage backup software, software agents, hardware and consumables to facilitate the backup and recovery of direct attached storage.
High Availability / Cluster Administration The resolving team will carry out:
Cluster administration activities monitoring and day to day cluster maintenance.
Simple cluster configuration changes.
Fail-over tests as defined in the associated schedule.
Proactive Performance Monitoring Enhanced Performance Management will provide a trend analysis of key performance indicators over a defined period.
Proactive Capacity Management As part of enhanced Capacity Management, the team will:
Conduct trend analysis to determine the expected growth.
Provide advice – based on the current utilization, maximum available capacity and expected growth – on resolving capacity issues; thus pro-actively preventing continuous idle capacity or regular capacity bottlenecks.
Scripting The resolving team will be responsible for creation and management of shells scripts or batch files.
Minor/Dot Release Updates The resolving team will carry out planning, installation and testing of vendor supplied minor operating system upgrades within vendor’s current supportability matrix.
Security and Regulatory Compliance Management. Service will be delivered in compliance with client specific security and regulatory standards, i.e. SOX, ISO27001, FDA, etc.
Print Queue Management The resolving team will manage centralized printing services for servers within a network.
Print services contain driver management (driver installation, updates), management of the spool, queue management.
