An overview of the role:
With the retail industry in the midst of one of the most profound periods of disruption and transformation, retailers need a partner to help them through this – a partner who helps them understand the issues, helps them define solutions and supports them on their journey of transformation.
Our Supply Chain consulting team brings together retail experts across all disciplines – from buying and merchandising, to fulfilment and store operations. We bring to the table deep industry expertise, practical lived experience, a collaborative and can-do attitude that inspires progress and change in our clients. In order to continue our growth and expand the knowledge we have, we are now looking to recruit more high calibre Retail Buying, Merchandising & Forecasting consultants to bring new ideas and perspectives into our team and the work we do.
Why this role?
A Buying & Merchandising consultant at Capgemini Invent will generally find themselves working in a multi-disciplinary team, designing and delivering solutions for a large retailer and supporting them to embed change in their business. No one project or day is the same, activities might vary from attending strategic thinking ideation sessions, to running large workshops with client stakeholders through to detailed project planning on spreadsheets. Some of our most recent projects include full end to end supply chain transformations, merchandising transformations, new buying and merchandising system implementations plus data and insights projects and touchless forecasting projects.
As a subject matter expert, you will be expected to draw on your knowledge and experience of buying, merchandising and/or forecasting and use it to inform and shape solutions for our clients. We find that combining excellent consulting core skills with industry knowledge (and the knowledge of Capgemini colleagues in other parts of our business) ensures the work we do is best-practice and something to be proud of. Change is already happening in how retailers source, plan, buy and trade their ranges. We are constantly developing our thinking around the future of buying, merchandising, forecasting and replenishment and you’ll also be a key part of developing this and making it a reality for our customers.
Like our most successful Retail Supply Chain Consultants, you will generally bring three things:
Retail Industry knowledge and experience
Our most successful consultants truly are subject matter experts in their domain. This expertise can be gained either through a career working in large or progressive retailers, or through delivering consulting assignments for large retail clients.
In particular, we require expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Sourcing & Vendor Management
- Category Management
We expect candidates to have multi channel experience, and to understand how the buying, merchandising and wider retail functions impact and affect the end to end retail value chain up to and including customer fulfilment and/or store operations.
Experience of different retail sectors, including fashion, general merchandise and/or grocery business models, potentially with an international dimension, is also desirable.
Experience using or implementing key retail systems such as SAP Retail, Oracle, Blue Yonder (or experience of in- house planning applications) is beneficial but not a necessity
A confident and collaborative attitude
Collaboration is key to our business and we require consultants at all grades to be confident and capable building relationships in our own and our client’s businesses
Experience in consultancy methods and approaches is beneficial, but if joining from industry (with no or limited consulting experience) we find resilience and a proactive attitude to learning is essential.
Being able to articulate your views on the future of buying and merchandising and the retail sector in general is a must. We are looking for entrepreneurial individuals with the knowledge and creativity to deliver truly inventive solutions to our clients.

- A sharp intellect, with strong problem solving skills as well as an ability to analyse data and formulate conclusions/recommendations.

- Consulting professionalism and flexibility – you’ll be able to adjust positively to situations that involve changing tasks and/or location, shifting priorities or ambiguity.
